Sounds like Gil’s getting closer to Girona. Really hope it goes through, as much for him as us. Think he’ll go on to have a decent career back in Spain. The technical ability is there but he’d blow away in a gust of wind and it’s definitely too windy over here for him.
He can definitely cut it in the top division but I don’t think he will ever be a regular for a top Spanish side. He didn’t really do much on loan at Sevilla and Valencia. Girona had a good season last year so even getting into their side won’t be easy for him.
Looks like he’s joining them on loan and they’ll have an option. We’ll be extending his deal but with a £15m release clause.
Loans with an option usually mean the player comes back end of the season. Hopefully this time he does well and they make it a permanent move. Spending time every transfer window on getting rid of the same players must be frustrating for the club
Awful transfer. Spurs have had some right rotten ones in recent years. Gil and Lo Celso simply have to be moved on properly this summer. Then you have the transfers that are bad but not as bad as those with the likes of Richarlison and Emerson Royal Edit- forgot about Reguilon too, how many failed loans has he had now?
I would not insult Gil with such a statement. He is simply too frail for the PL, nothing more. The club now needs to do the balance sheet calculus to allow the player to be permanently signed.
Every club has these sort of issues. If you overspend on a player then you need to minimise the financial hit. It doesn't matter how.
I agree he isn't nearly as bad a signing as Ndombele was, but KH has already disproved your conclusion. The failed loans at Valencia and Sevilla, neither of whom are exactly giants of the Spanish game anymore (albeit the latter's decline has been more recent) seem to indicate that it the problem isn't just that the PL is too physical, because he went back to Spain and flopped twice. The problem is simply that he isn't very good and tbh never has been. We looked at a player with a decent reputation at youth level whose only impressive spells at senior level were at two nothing clubs in Leganes and Eibar. The former were a second division side and the latter were relegated from La Liga the year he played for them. We looked at that and gambled £28m plus Lamela on the chance that he'd turn into the next David Silva. Awful, awful transfer for a player who simply isn't very good. Nothing to do with physique. He just isn't that good..
I was not insulting the player so much as the transfer itself £25 million plus Coco to sit on the bench or be loaned out for 3/4 seasons is very poor recruitment to my mind
One is a very skilful player with an attitude problem, the other was an excellent youth player who has never improved. Every club has at least one of each of those.
Looks to me like we still haven’t learnt judging from our signings so far. I don’t think ‘we’ will ever learn tbh because ‘we’ learning means Levy having a brain transplant and that isn’t happening
The biggest issue with the Gil transfer is that paying in effect somewhere between £30m to £35m effectively makes him a starter - but his main position was LW, which means he couldn't be a starter as that's Sonny's best position While there is a possibility that Nuno was thinking of Sonny up top with Bryan on the left and that might have changed how things panned out, that likely wouldn't have happened in the first season for the obvious reason defenders habitually checked him into the advertising hoardings so he needed to spend as much time in the gym as on the training ground until he didn't look as waiflike as an academy player it's obvious we are planning on releasing when their contract is up
I know but Spurs spent £85million (before wages) plus Lamela to get the pair of them. Absolutely horrific business by the club. You can’t just say these things happen.
I don’t mind the clubs signing players who need to develop and teenagers with potential but it’s has to be done as well as signing ready made starters not instead of. Last summer saw players signed who went straight into the starting 11, need at least 2 of those asap as well as the likes of Gray and Bergvall and the Korean kid
Yeah kids signing isn’t the issue but kids being the only signing and then us getting told that they will all come together in the future by when the manager will have been sacked already is the problem
