My Great grandparents were Irish Catholics and settled in England following the Irish Diaspora and the Great Starvation so I have a great deal of sympathy with those people who were treated despicably by the English absent landlords. But McClean is as you say a bellend who is intent on stirring the ashes of a conflict that had/has more to do with running drugs and firearms than the historical treatment of the Irish Catholics.
