It’s come from the club tho right? If they’re negotiating a fee they’re not going to tell the media it’s imminent and he’s their first choice. They need the other party to think we have other options.
What do you want the club to say? They can't piss off Caen by saying yeah it's basically done but at the same time they can't piss off Mendy by saying there's nothing in it but they also need to protect themselves, they can't say it's done incase it falls through. A quote like that from Mendy is unprecedented, it probably caught the club off guard.
And if they said a deal was close it would tell Caen that we are close to accepting their asking price. Would be terrible negotiating. The quotes from him tonight put us in an excellent negotiation position and it would be shooting ourselves in the foot if we acted like it’s a done deal
