If he fulfils his potential, it could be Ranger.
If he keeps up this kind of goalscoring, it could possibly be Best.
Failing that it would have to be a new signing or even retire it? Shola has made the 23 legendary and anyway he and Lover arent good enough.

Think it'll be kept for a new guy, somebody a bit special.

Damn, it's hard to type with your fingers crossed.

Well after its been dragged through the **** by Carroll and not much better by Martins, why not keep the good memories we have of it instead of ruining its reputation?

When people think of the number 9 shirt 95% of people think of Shearer. Don't worry, I bet most none newcastle fans ever knew Martins had the shirt.

Well from now on no one should get it just because they're a "big name" so any new guy will need to prove they are worthy (just as any young lad would have to as well).

Spot on. I can't help thinking that if Carroll had had to wait longer to get the number 9 shirt, by which I mean he hadn't been awarded it yet, he might not have left so soon. He was able to achieve that wish too easily and he didn't appreciate it.

Agree, the fame went straight to his head, in the space of 18 months he went from a reserve striker dreaming of one day playing for the first team to an England international and the Newcastle number 9 who thinks he can do anything.

leave it for next season, we dont need to have one just yet.
players need to earn to wear this shirt, lets not just chuck it around to anyone.

Agree - don't give it to anyone next year, let's see who steps up and earns the right to wear it, and not over 3 or 4 games but over a whole season. I certaintly wouldn't give it to Ranger. Prospect tho he undoubtedley is, if/when he does start performing to his full potential and on a regular basis, it won't take much to turn his head:

''Spot on. I can't help thinking that if Carroll had had to wait longer to get the number 9 shirt, by which I mean he hadn't been awarded it yet, he might not have left so soon. FFWD a season or two and it'll be a case of just substituting Rangers name for Carol's in the above statements.

Personally think it'll go to whoever our new superstar striker signing is in the Summer.

Hold it until somebody earns it, then there'll be no regrets.
