The only way we get Ramsdale is if he is happy to come to a relegation fight where he will be kept very busy, Arsenal are willing to heavily subsidise his wages, and no other teams are also interested in the loan…yeah, doesn’t seem likely. Still hopeful we can get some good GK who wants game time in on loan though, just seems very unlikely that GK would be Ramsdale. He’s done his time in relegation scraps and proven himself already with Bournemouth.
Tempted to have a bit of a look at who the first choices of all the other clubs are. It’s interesting and presumably a relief for many that there are still plenty of GK links
My guess is that Ramsdale's priority is first team football, and as such wouldn't be against the prospect of a relegation battle if that was the way to get it. However, I suspect there would be far bigger teams than us who are interested, and that he wouldn't need to join a relegation battle in order to get that first team football. Not for a second do I see us getting this one over the line.
Aren’t the Ramsdale rumours just stemming from him being in the crowd for the playoff final? Someone like Steele who has been linked seems far more likely.
We'd be breaking our wage structure for Ramsdale - no way around it. Depending on what sources you believe he might currently be on double any of our players. Given the way we've done business so far I just can't see it. Not even if he was keen, and on loan.
If we got Ramsdale I assume it would be a loan. So he’d be getting paid his current wage regardless He could well end up at Ipswich as they have much more space in their wage bill and need a goalkeeper. I remember Forest went big on a loan for an unwanted big club goalkeeper when they came back up.
Yep they got Keylor Navas from PSG. Don’t really know if he was considered a success or not but I imagine he was. Spending big (either via wages on loan or transfer fee) on a proven goalkeeper who can bring calmness and stability to the whole back line would be very wise.
I get the feeling that we won't be after a senior 'keeper given McCarthy's extension. However, I wouldn't be surprised if we went in to get a junior one on loan to provide competition whilst Baz is out (eg Rushworth from Brighton). That being said I'd be delighted to be proven wrong and for us to look for an upgrade even if it is only for the season.
I just don’t see the point in bringing in a young keeper on loan to compete. Firstly the loaning club would probably want reassurances about playing time for a young player they have high hopes for, and sitting on the bench is pointless. From our perspective a young keeper who hasn’t played in the PL is a risk, and if the club are as high on Bazunu as it appears then we aren’t going to make the deal permanent anyway. An older second or third choice keeper at their current club would suit everyone. I think we will bring in someone like Steele who is probably about the same as McCarthy
Im sure you’re not alone, but the elephant in the room is Bazunu. If we have given up on him being the keeper we thought he was going to be then by all means we should be targeting the best we can. I don’t get that impression though and I think we are targeting the best we can who we only want for this season. I think that’s why they have extended McCarthy because of the available players in that category not many are better than McCarthy
Is Lis still with Saints? I mean, not out on loan. If so, with Bazunu as well, we currently have four first team keepers. I'm not sure we'd even be in the market, no matter how important the position.
He’s still here as far as I’m aware. Was talk of some interest and us selling him a few weeks ago. Not sure on his work permit situation as well and whether he can play for us.
The Lis signing was always a weird one. Seemed like we signed him with no intention of him ever playing for Saints.
