I always prefer an English manager (actually think it should be mandated in same way players are) but if Pep or Klopp are interested you couldn't blame the FA for going that route. Funnily enough though I'm not convinced Pep and Klopp would be that good in international football. The former needs time to instil his style and generally lots of signings who can play in that way and the latter also coaches a style which takes a lot of time to perfect. I think both do a lot of their best work on the training ground and you just don't get the same amount of time with the national side to do that work and coach players into that style. With the modern high press way of playing I think it's harder to coach a national side to play that way to a high level unless you have lots of players from one club who play that style. Of the two I think Klopp would do better as he's shown he can adapt his tactics to weaker squads which Pep has never needed to but it wouldn't surprise me at all if both struggled in international football. Poch too for similar reasons.
Poch and Klopp are almost honorary Englishmen these days. I’d love to see what they could do. Doubt it’ll happen though.
Agree. Lampard would be a joke. Wouldn’t even want him in charge of saints. Assuming money is no object - We have to go all out for Klopp. Doubt he’d be interested so it’s then pochettino. Doubt he’d be interested either so then it’s any other available managers that have won trophies with international teams or otherwise. (Plenty fall here) Then Howe Then Potter Then a host of other managers including McKenna and Martin. Then lampard. Make no mistake this next appointment is huge. We can win something.
Probably have to wait until 2030 World Cup for next chance to win anything. Kane should’ve retired by then and taken his curse with him
No point sacking Southgate for the sake of it. Either bring in someone who has shown they are capable recently, even if that is Potter, but ideally Klopp or Pep.
We won’t sack him, he’ll walk. I’m with Libby - I actually think Klopp/Poch would be better at international management than Pep, bizarrely.
Same thing - he is out of contract so not renewing is bsically sacking. Klopp maybe because of his man management but poch hasn't been great anywhere for a long while. I'd take Pep in a heartbeat. With this squad he would be perfect
Southgate has to go, not brave enough, by and larger played the same players throughout even though it never really clicked, Kane is past it, we can all see that so why can't Southgate? I've said it before, there's something dodgy going on behind the scenes, there's a reason he picks certain players even though they aren't the right players for the tactics. Too many square pegs in round holes for me! For me Potter is a good shout and with him being an ex Saint, keeps up the tradition of only Managers that have been at Saints can get us to a final!!
Well no, because they’ve been desperately trying to get him to stay. He won’t be sacked. It’ll be his decision not to renew.
Poch’s man management is superb. And he’s far more tactically astute than Southgate. By miles. He’s been at two basket case clubs since his brilliant spell at Spurs. I actually think that under the conditions at Chelsea he did a good job, and had turned them around too.
It would have to be the best job in world football right now. A good manager can take this players to the world cup and win it. Top managers would surely love that opportunity. The talent we didn't even use is better than some of the strating 11 of other good teams.
Not as disappointed as I thought I’d be. Probably because we’ve been pretty **** all tournament and Spain have been pretty good all tournament. With the players we have it shouldn’t have been our tactic, but relying on moments from your big star players who had absolute stinkers of a tournament and didn’t look fit, completely hamstrung us. Meant we had to keep starting them and keeping them on the pitch far too long in the hope they’d pull a rabbit out of the hat, despite it being to the detriment of the team. Carrying 1 player is a big ask, and we were regularly carrying 2 or 3 (or 4). We got away with it to get anywhere near as far as we did…and while that is because we did keep just about pulling rabbits out of hats, our luck was always likely to run out sooner or later.
Annoying thing after all that is that I'm not even that bothered about Saints this season. We may or may not stay up, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it at times. But compared to massive moments like that, i just doesn't mean all that much. Obviously the odd season Saints do get close to greatness, then it is brilliant. But you never expect it and with the way football is these days it will become even more rare than it already is.
I was quite passively and graciously accepting defeat until that bastard Palmer had to score and rope me right back in. I think it isn't quite as painful as Italy because we knew Spain were **** hot, I mean this is one of the most deserved tournament wins of all time with them being consistently brilliant throughout. With the players we have we should have been able to go toe to toe with Spain though and that is a managerial failing, even if he has done well in other aspects.
The most annoying thng for me is the lack of logic that Southgate shows. Ok - so you want to play defensive, possession football. Why have you left Grealish at home? He is literally peps main man on the left. You’re clearly asking Pickford to play it long. Why are you playing Kane over Toney? Clearly Kane can’t hold it up all tournament. There is a real lack of vision and clarity with Southgate. Tactically he is naive and just hopes things will happen. We never dominate a game. Despite that though…. He has done so well. And to be fair; if we’d got a lucky winner tonight then he would have looked like a genius. But truthfully we all know we have underperformed this tournament.
