Spain fully deserved it but I think if England were a bit more positive they could have caused an upset.

    This.

We had Watkins pace pushing them back with Bellingham, Saka, Foden and Palmer behind him. Let them play football! Instead, we sat back and tried to counter. Embarrassing approach

He wouldn't cos he was on a yellow. That should be his last game for England.

It really should. There's better there now to do the running and get the lest out of Palmer, foden and Bellingham.

I wouldn't be surprised that it comes out that Kane has been injured for the whole tournament, he clearly looks way off the pace lumbering around.

Which matches my opinion of Kane, that he is selfish and in it for his personal glory.

When you look at the strength of England it's attackers.

Saka is only playing cos he is willing play rb in a back 5

Watkins, toney and several other 9s are available. Kane was never not starting no matter how he stunk.

Bellingham, foden, Palmer, saka, eze only got a game cos he would play lb. Gordon got 5mins or something cos he only runs forward.

You've defenders like trent who can pass but he waited 4 games for shaw to hit the same but slightly less precise cross field ball. But walker and trippier would play no matter what.

Ah well. Time to see some retirements

No real surprise. Playing defensive football can get you so far in a knockout tournament but when you come up against team that will work the ball against you, will struggle.

The technical qualities we have in that front line and midfield we should be able to dictate tempo but just can’t happen.

I hope FA look at the next coach and the style. Gareth didn’t have a style when he got the job as didn’t have experience and was just hoping to keep things tight and Nick a win. Potter is the obvious choice, can get his teams controlling games through tactics and that’s how you win tournaments.

The attacking talent we have we should be going out and attacking teams, much better chance to win games 4-3 with the quality we have up top but Southgate would much rather a 1-0

    Can't see many.

Walker and Trippier perhaps as they're of an age.

Rest of the squad is still young enough to go to the WC and beyond.
Can't see Kane ever retiring from England, a future manager will have to not pick him

Same for Pickford although, as much as I don't like our rate him, he's done alright this tournament

Gareth Southgate is the only manager in the world who could take the Bundesliga top scorer, La Liga player of the season and the EPL player of the season, and pick a system that makes all three completely ineffective.

If we renew Southgates contract, if I was Anthony Gordon or Trent, I'd refuse to play for him

He needs a manager to sit him down and tell him he’s not Pirlo. There’s a reason he’s in goal and not CM and that’s because there are better players at passing the ball. Give it to your CB and let them switch the play etc. lost count how many times he whacked it long to no one or high to Saka foden to lose a header.

Summed up in last couple minutes where ball is thrown back to him and instead of taking a touch and knocking to Cb to bring it forward he volleys it 70 yards out for a throw.

Agree, but maybe it was Southgate who wanted him to play.

I think Southgate deserves a lot of credit for transforming the whole atmosphere around the England team and for getting results - I'm 41 today and seen about as many knockout wins in this tournament alone than in all the years before Gareth. No-one wanted the job when he took over and he's created a team with togetherness and spirit and that regularly goes deep in tournaments. The results usually papered over the performances though, and it feels like he's both taken them as far as he can and that with the players coming through, they're winning at least partielle despite him instead of because of him. If he does go, then the next appointment is crucial, because there's a lot that the next manager could get wrong, but get the right person in and they could go to the next level.

Southgate's post match interview... He says Spain were winning possession in midfield and that was allowing them to control the play. If you recognised this, why didn't you change tactics and try to claim control? Just put a third player in midfield to help Rice and Manioo ffs

I don't think that is the case. It's one of the best paid jobs going.

It's also one job where there's an absolute insistence that the person in it must be a little englander.

No other nation at the top table has thier league flooded with foreign coaches and there is zero requirement anywhere to have homegrown coaching Staff within clubs management structures.

In short Spain have the talent in players but usually will have 3 or 4 options for manager at any time. Same for Italy. Same for gemrnsy, same for France.

    England have who?

Eddie ****ing howe or graham ffs Potter.

England will not throw the net any wider than thst now so deny our team the best possible coaching.

England have had a number of golden generations now but have rarely had 25-30 options Like Southgate did.

    1990 semis. Bobby robson
1992/1994 absolute dog of a manager in graham Taylor, sorry but he was a ****ing dog. Team wasn't great either.
1996 semis. Interesting manager and team.
1998. Last 16, lost on pens

theres then a gap where the prem got massively into foreign players and didn't developed much talent

2000. didn't even get there. Handled controversy and useless Keegan (tactically inept)
2002 wf. Lost to winners Brazil.
2006 qf Lost on pens due to Beckham red.
2010 last 16.were awful, hammered by Germany
2012 not even there. Again dog of a manager.

Hg ruled are established by uefa and fully brought in in 2006 to 2009

2014 group exit Hodgson who's as bad as Southgate.
2016 last 26 exit to Iceland ffs.

Now the era of Southgate starts 10 years after hg ruled are put in.

2018. Semis. Raised route I've ever seen for a manager.
2020/21 final at home. Main game last 16 v a poor German side and were favourites but win but lose to Italy on pens.
2022. Qf exit. Lost to France after an easy group.and easy last 16.
2024. Final. Best match was against the Netherlands who folded under pressure. The rest of the tournament were against poor small sides. Until the final.

England have not has such depth of squad since the early 1990s imo.

Why? Because the bosman rule was finally dealt with by uefa forcing clubs to develop their own talent.

In 2006 for example Rooney broke his meta tarsel for utd and England were goosed. There was no lw option at all.

At one point you couldn't final amy decent England keepers

Right now Southgate is spoiled for choice in wingers, midfielders, and full backs and the only area he is struggling with is probably cbs as he won't trust any. Keepers are not brilliant but there's enough options

Englandnhave the richest leaguie in the world and develop players as they are now forced to.

The opportunity now is to go get the very best coach and marry that with the best of English staff.

We won't do it. We.are.literally falling over ourselves with option to play but we chose instead to grind and play a back 5 with sake dropping that deep as we had zero really faith in guehi or konsa.

I'd like to point out the team thst lost to iceland

    Hart
    Walker cahill smalling rose
    Alli Dier rooney
    Sturrodge knee sterling

What is that? a failing Rooney that couldn't be dropped beside two non cms and no width added to two useless cbs.

But let's thank Gareth Southgate. At least he wasn't FAT SHAM ALLARDYCE

Yes England actually appointed that dog an a ****ing manager. Can you imagine what he'd have done with these players
