Interesting this in view of whats going on at the Leveson enquiry

NOW journalist giving evidence today I quote

He also said it was not for anyone to say whether a story was or was not in the public interest.

"Circulation defines what is the public interest," he said.

"I see no difference between what the public is interested in and the public interest. Surely they are clever enough to make a decision whether or not they want to put their hand in their pocket and bring out a pound and buy it."

    Says it all really

Let me turn this round, do you believe that the press have a right to report on a mans private life ???? whether he is in the public eye or not. My comment is heartfelt, these so called `reporters` should be outed, and whatever punishment deemed fit applied. I believe in the Bible it suggests an `eye for an eye`. I am not a violent man, but would protect my family and my own privacy with vigour as everyone deserves the right to such. I also believe in re-instating the death penalty for those deserving, so...... `IF` this is true... and yet again i repeate `IF`... and is subsequently proven, what would your mindset be for causing the death of a man ?????

I've also heard this rumour, my first thought: Why would anyone take their life for being outed as gay in the year 2011, maybe in the 1940's/50's but today?? Then I thought about the impact such a revelation would have on his wife, sons and family and the wider impact, his friends, work etc.

If and it's a huge "if" this is true my guess is the newspaper/s involved will bury it and and chances are we will never know - good! At least something good would have come out of this terrible tragedy. If we do find out this is true I hope the newspaper/s involved will sink faster than the titanic. At a time when the press are in the spotlight (I hope) they will be quaking in their boots!

Can't the papers just leave the speculation as to why Gary Speed did what he did alone for now? Can't they just leave his family and friends to grieve instead of trying to give the reasons why.

I believe that anyone should be able to say whatever they want at any time. If the press were violent towards him or violative of his property when they extracted this alleged information, then obviously they should be dealt with, and that would most likely require a level of violence to fine them/incarcerate them/whatever. But if they found out the information legitimately through an associate telling them or whatever, no, I don't think actual violence should be employed by the police, the family or vigilantes.

As someone who's hardly a fan of the idea of enforced government, I think a person should only be killed if they have to be when someone's defending a life or possessions (whether theirs or someone else's) from directly being taken (i.e. violatively by another person, not indirectly like suicide).

If this rumour is found to be true, I hope the journalist in question is sacked, publicly reprimanded, marginalized and leads a life of misfortune and woe. But I don't want him to be met with corporal or capital punishment from the state or anyone else. The 'eye for an eye' in this instance would be using the power of words (which he himself exploited and abused) against him, to make sure his life was appropriately made a misery too.

    <ok>

It feels a bit wrong even discussing it TBH, but a few posts on an internet forum won't do any harm, whereas the national press most certainly will. If the family are ready for the truth to come out, they should do so. But if not, I hope it isn't brought into the public eye for their sake.

I forget who said it, but someone was quoted the other day that there needs to be a line drawn between celebrities and people who make their money in the public eye. People like managers and even TV presenters are just doing a job - not selling their souls; yet the British Press seem to think they have a right to announce things because its in the public interest.

Just because some celebrities flaunt their status like the Beckhams or Jordan, doesn't mean everyone should be fair game.

Someone texted me with the news that he was a 'well-hung gay'; supposed to be a funny revelation - deleted. Someone else thinks he had huge gambling debts. Who cares, he's gone and that is damn sad - stop your silly rants and bickering.

Yes, after the NOTW the saga you would hope an improvement in ethics and morals might have occurred. It was only a matter of months ago, and now it this, so soon (if true, of course).

I heard also it was the Star, which is more of a comic, with added tits, racism and lies. Written by children.

I should think the person that contacted him to let him know he was about to crush his world for no other reason than circulation figures that week feels rather atrocious now. You would hope so anyway. I tend to think he/she's probably morally bankrupt though.

Just goes to show that what's harmless, gossipy tittle tattle to some, is a matter of life or death to others. He was married with children, so this could, and possibly would have destroyed everything. Whether he should have lived a life of denial in the first place is a separate issue, but it's HIS choice and in all likelihood, family life was probably good. Until the Star turns up, with it's self appointed authority on the subject, haphazardly scatter-gunning threats and innuendo, with no regard for the consequences. And for what reason? Because Wales were starting to do quite well? Slow news week obviously. Well, not now that Gary Speed is dead.

More first rate British journalism. No lessons learned.

Leeds 18, I think we`ll have to agree to disagree with regards whats happens to those possibly responsible, it may all be hyperthitcal and probably is because the truth I feel certain will never out. Suffice to say that a very popular man has now gone and he should be remembered fondly. However, my article also highlighted the problems of `possibly` being different playing in the world of football, I`m sure ther will be a number of gay footballers plying their trade, while not wishing to draw attention to this, surely they should be allowed to live their life... without fear of castination. You may be a supporter of free reporting, I believe while people are `performing in the public eye` then its there to report on, the moment they move into their personal lives, then unless they are causing harm to others then it should stay private.

I think Leeds 18 has taken the comments literally, obviously nobody here wants to go and hunt and kill journalists but its right to be very angry if they have hounded a man to his death and I don't understand why a Leeds fan would criticise anybody angry at why one of their players killed themselves if this is what happened

Not really the point Bob. No one has said they have broken the law if the story is true. Suppose it is true, just for a minute. A loved idol of thousands has spent the majority of his life trying to be something he is not, because of the phobia that was rampant when he started his career, in that sport. The pressure to do that must have been enormous, assuming it was on such a scale that he could hide it from his entire family. He has seen many other players suffer and their family broken by it.

Now someone has started a whisper, maybe from a distant rumour or just guesswork. Someone sells it to the media (It has to be a low rent red top of course), because Wales are starting to progress for once. They ring him up their "target" to get a response, and threaten him with exposure. His world collapses and long hidden mental illness/stress or panic takes over.

That jounalists think this is part of their everyday "job" is sickening and none of their, or our business. Quite frankly I am not interested in stuff like that and neither should anyone else.

Whilst I agree with you, the unfortunate situation is that in the society we live in, a lot of people would buy a paper that ran that story as people are obsessed with gossip regarding the private lives of people in the public eye

Yeh I know, just having a whinge. Would never want to gag the press, but they should learn to be responsible occasionally.

Some interesting reading on this thread. Granted it's all speculation . Agree that IF true the press need to be accountable however I agree with the above and accountability would also have to be pointed at all the mindless twats who buy sensationalism tabloid bullshit that exposes everyday people who want to live the lives they lead. I don't care if Gary speed was straight, gay or anything else that is perfectly legal - he was no doubt just a bloke who happened to be very good at something that put him In The public eye trying to lead his life. Why the **** should he suffer for that? Rest in peace Gary.

Unfortunately the gutter press have been feeding an ever receptive readership.
The latest phone hacking inquiry has been about the tabloids using phone hacking to produce the stories that they rightly thought the public wanted to read.
If the public had stopped buying the papers with these type of stories they wouldn't have printed.
It needed phone hacking to close down the top selling 'News Of The Screws', not the readers saying 'enough is enough'.

    Sorry, rant over.

I agree that what the press do is completely wrong and I hate it, but my comments were aimed at those wanting to hunt the supposed journo down like it's a witch hunt or something, not that I think the press are right. And the press should not be held accountable, they were doing their job and lets be honest this would have been a big story and would have sold, and if it's true I would say the ball is entirely in Gary Speeds court and that it's a pretty crap reason for him to top himself IF it was the sole reason. As can be seen on another thread I'm struggling at why people would want to end their own life due to mental illness, never mind a story that could be denied or anything, that really would be running away from a problem to the highest degree.

I get the feeling though these rumours are bullshit as this would have been straight out in the papers as now he's actually dead this would be an even bigger seller than the original article.

With that said the press should burn in hell anyway for being nosey privacy invading ****s, and if the rumours are correct then measures should be taken that should have been taken long ago, like laws that it's illegal to report on someones private life without their permission, NOT journos getting their heads cut off, balls clamped (castrated possibly) or even losing their jobs. RIP Gary.

    Depressingly true.

We have a lot of people who hoover up vast volumes of total garbage (especially if it's Peter Andre or some vacuous **** from Essex type ****). The newspapers are a main artery here, as is TV I feel. If anything, the demand gets stronger.

The only way really you could properly dent it is regulation, but then is that still a free press? Unfortunately, I think this is a by-product of being able to say that we HAVE a free press, and if you value that you have to put up with it. Frustrating as it is.
