I've heard this rumour and heard that he was Bi as well, various rumours going around. In todays day and age famous people are really ridiculed for being gay, it's not like it was in the 80's for example. Everything was going so well in his public life, so seems a very strange thing to do, especially off one phone call from the scummy press. You don't know really what was going on in his private life, but something must have pushed him over the edge. Still a sad state of affairs.
I was also told that during his youth he was a bit of a dabbler in the old columbian smelling salts. Being the late 80's early 90's it wouldn't really surprise me if many of them were, and I doubt it had anything to do with that, but goes to show there's a lot more than the obvious to consider!
He was depressed, must have been. A chemical imbalance in the brain, there doesn't necessarily have to be a juicy story behind it. Though if there is, no doubt we'll hear about it sooner or later.
