Yeah thats what I'd hope too, or at least players with lots of potential to supplement the squad as I don't even have an issue with the way we are approaching loans because it has to be said, for the most part the recent loans have been ambitious and a much better quality of player than we're likely to attract otherwise.
One thing about the Philogene sell-on. It keeps being reported in a simplified way as a 'deduction' from the fee we receive because it goes back to Villa. But in accounting terms I doubt that's happening. I'd have thought they will be paying us the full amount (let's say it's £18m as reported) and we'll be paying them the sell-on amount separately (£5.4m if it's 30% of the fee, or ~£3.9m if it's 30% of the profit which is probably more likely), as an addition to the transfer fee we paid them originally. If my understanding of the FFP rules is correct, that £3.9m that we pay them would be amortised over the three years of the contract he signed with us a year ago, so £1.3m per year, whereas the £18m we receive will all go on this year's books. This is the rule that clubs have often been exploiting to increase their headroom and will probably benefit us in the same way. Assuming all of my maths and assumptions are correct, the deal would give us £16.7m of extra FFP headroom in this financial year even though the net amount we actually receive would be more like £14.1m.
On the Moore thing, regardless of what we think about the pros and cons of signing him, to miss out on an obvious priority target can't be good. If we were throwing really good terms at him as it sounds like we were then that suggests we were pretty eager (or desperate?) and will presumably be even moreso for the next target on the list. Definitely doesn't bode well. As for Mike White's thread about the need for the to get moving, maybe I've got it wrong but wasn't it him who yesterday broke the Kieffer Moore story that the club had been trying to keep quiet? That can't have helped. Other clubs swooping in is exactly why they like to keep it quiet for as long as possible. If I've got that wrong then sorry Mike (he always seems to see things on here) but if it was him that broke it first while others had sat on it as instructed then that's a bit poor I think.

I am not sure on it to be honest a 3 year deal for somebody 32 years old at the start of the season bit torn between disappointed and not bothered, hopefully doesnt tare up trees at the blunts.... time will tell

Everton wouldn’t go higher than £16m, Palace wouldn’t go higher than £18m. Philogene is a massive risk for a premier league club at this stage, I personally think he’s going too early. Albeit I share the sentiment about Tan/Acun’s messaging

I think we all thought it unfortunately. Clearly we all value him much higher than the market does which is hard but ultimately when you factor in the circumstances IMO it’s not as bad as some are making out m
We sold him for less than KLP. Not sure that's an issue with our valuation and everything to do with Acun panicking about FFP.
The Philogene one is a weird one though in fairness. Emery wanted to keep him after pre season, so essentially we’ve been paid to develop him for a season as they never wanted to lose him, Emery being the a big push behind the deal to bring him back.
Which is strange because late in the season there was a lot in the press about how Villa had no intention of taking him back. They signed Rogers and a few others in those positions. I agree on the perspective that we've essentially got 8m for developing him which is more than Delap and Morton for example so it's not the end of the world from that perspective.. but from the perspective that he's our player on a reasonably long term deal after the season he had it's very very cheap.
His wife is expecting and his entire support network is in Sheffield. They were probably the one club that could have beaten us to him given the circumstances surrounding his personal life and with them also operating on a budget, they presumably heard about our bid, realised they could afford him and went for it (though I suspect his agent had something to do with it, will be listening to his signing interview with great interest). The fact he turned down a very good deal with us to sign for Sheffield United suggests it isn't about the football on this one and to be fair, if it was me and my wife wanted to stay put or move back to Scotland, I'd do the exact same thing for my family. Somebody else mentioned "putting our eggs in one basket", but I don't think that's the case either. The Moore deal falling through hits harder only because we haven't heard any other names being close. We're operating on a specific budget, so I'm not surprised at the hush surrounding incomings, even my usual source hasn't got much (though I will say that there's good reason for my optimism and it isn't the amphetamines I'm on. Well, not entirely). We have plenty of targets, now that Greaves and Philogene have gone, we have a better picture of which of those targets we can go for. It wouldn't surprise me if we've been talking to a couple of players based in Turkey while we've been out there.
Maybe my UK geography isn't great but couldn't he have moved back to Sheffield and commuted to Hull? Are the two cities that far apart?
