Looking at flights to go out to Spain on Friday, my daughter lives in white washed village called competa. In the village square they are putting up tables and a massive screen for the final, gonna be rammed with Spaniards. Daughter’s got a table in the middle, I cannot wait to bate the buggers on Sunday… there are quite a few expats live there so I won’t be alone. Mrs red is fuming, apparently my clothes will be outside for when I get back on Monday… I may not ****ing come back, good job my son lives just across the road in case I do lol. “ COME ON ENGLAND “ !!

How fitting that it was a Villa player that pissed on Koeman’s chips.

From La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Google translate - caveat)

England scream in the 90th minute! Watkins overturns Holland and takes the Lions to the Euro final with Spain

The Oranje, ahead through Simons, were pegged back by a penalty from Kane before a last-minute gem from the Aston Villa player, brought on at the end by coach Southgate

    from our correspondent Luca Bianchin

    July 10, 2024 (edit July 11, 2024 | 00:05) - DORTMUND

Gareth Southgate has something to tell you. The most controversial manager in the Kingdom, the most criticized in the Euro, takes England to the final with the following magic: with 10 minutes left in regulation time in a deadlocked match, he takes off Kane and Foden – simply the best of the first half, along with Mainoo – and plays Palmer and Watkins. What happens is that in injury time Palmer finds Watkins in the area and good old Ollie turns like Kane in his heyday: a powerful right-footed shot into the corner for 2-1 England. On Sunday, in Berlin, reds against whites: Spain-England, Yamal against Bellingham. To remember that this game has a future, what more could you ask for?

    WHO IS WATKINS

England-Holland ends 2-1 and it is worth remembering who Ollie Watkins is from Newton Abbot. Striker born in 1995, in the Championship with Brentford until 2020, then only Aston Villa. What matters: Aston Villa with Emery, who did him a great favor by improving him. Last season 19 goals in the Premier League and 8 in the Conference. To be clear: in Italy he would be a starter without question.

    HOLLAND-ENGLAND GOALS

Before talking about the match, a reminder for those who didn't see the goals. Holland comes out of nowhere after 7 minutes. Xavi Simons wins a physical duel with Rice, not exactly a high probability event, steals the ball and remembers that with Yamal-Musiala-Bellingham & co this is the European Championship for boys. "Why not me?". Exactly. Walker watches him for a second too long and Xavi slips and puts it near the top corner from outside the area: 1-0 Holland. England's equaliser comes from Saka, who plays one-on-one with Aké in the area. He aims, he aims, in the end the ball arrives in the area where Kane kicks high. Yes, but Dumfries hammered his foot: VAR review and penalty. Kane, ice in his veins, puts it in with a cross.

    THE MATCH

Yes, but what kind of match was it? Great match, frankly. Worthy of the semi-final. For those looking for a summary, a match with changing DNA. In the first 10 minutes, Holland was good with Xavi Simons' goal in the 7th minute. Then only England until the 35th minute. In less than half an hour, Kane scored from a penalty (18th minute) and Foden came close twice. First he finalized a great hand-to-hand action - a bit rugby-like - with a through ball from Mainoo and his slalom in the Van Dijk area: the shot went over Verbruggen who was coming out but not Dumfries, who saved on the line. Then he, Foden, curled a shot from outside the area: outside the post. In the middle, Holland also felt the "sdong": corner from the right, Dumfries (here he is again!) headed it onto the crossbar. At 35', as we were saying, another plot twist , change of scenery. Depay gets hurt and Koeman has the right idea: he moves Malen to the front, sends Xavi to the right and brings in Veerman, a pure midfielder to neutralize the English possession. Successful. When Malen comes out for Weghorst, little changes: the game is balanced, less beautiful but more closed. It goes like this for the entire second half which has two-chances-two, no more. Minute 10: Van Dijk deflects into the area, together with Walker, a free kick from the right. Pickford parries. Minute 34: England finds Walker who crosses low, in the area Saka scores... and it seems like we're seeing Switzerland-England again. Problem: he's offside by a millimeter and Zwayer cancels it.

    THE EURO 2024 FINAL

Southgate then plays Palmer and Watkins and the rest is history. And so, Spain against England, who last met in the 2018-19 Nations League group. In London, Spain won - 2-1 in a comeback - and in Seville 3-2 for England, with a brace from Sterling and a goal from Rashford. A different weight compared to this final. The most important match ever remains the quarter-final at the 1996 European Championship: in London 0-0 with a penalty shootout, Hierro and Nadal, Rafa's uncle, miss and England go to the semi-final. They will lose, again on penalties, against Germany, with a decisive error by Southgate... How the world changes, eh?

It wasn't just Koeman's non-sending off in that game that was dodgy.....

If I recall correctly, the resultant free-kick was charged down unfairly by the Dutch - they were about 2 yards away when it was struck. But the ref waved it away. Later on, England did exactly the same thing to a Dutch free-kick and the ref penalised them. And it was the retaken fre-kick from which Koeman scored.

So anyone complaining about the penalty last night being a bit dodgy can **** right off. As far as I'm concerned, the Netherlands still owe us one.

It’s taken since 1966 for England to get a break in tournament football. It’s happens sooner or later.

    Thing is
By the letter of football rules
    It was a penalty

That happens in middle of the pitch
Its a freekick 100% of the time

And any foul inside the penalty box
    Is a penalty

Theres no nuances about where on the pitch and its severity

It seems harsh due to it being a penalty
But a foul is a foul

Gary Neville was saying that defenders who make challenges in the box should be given leeway.

    Well done Gary.
