We are going to see a lot of talk in the UK soon about the electoral system, I guarantee you see Farage (possibly rightly) saying Alternative Vote is not good enough because he knows Reform will be hit with the same type of problems we see the right face in europe.
I will admit to being a little concerned about the possibility of a far right party in France, and how they would work with a centre left party in the UK. If the exit polls are correct I think we've dodged a bullet tbph.
It's looking as though France have steered themselves away from embracing a far right ideology. That's a big deal for Europe with the UK and France electing centre left govts.
France haven’t elected any government, that’s the problem. It’s great that they’ve avoided a bunch of neo-fascists in power, but we’re about to witness one of the weaknesses of PR. No one has a majority, and it remains to be seen whether the Front Populaire can work with what’s left of the centrists. The French left have shown themselves unable to work with each other recently, they’re exactly like that sketch in Life of Brian
They’ll work it out over a three hour lunch of cheese and pate and no one will notice anything different by this time next week. Or they’ll burn down the Olympic village.
Not sure what's happened but she aint got no chance. Reeves on SKY and the other channels probably, about affordable and social housing, think it might upset a few NIMBY's which I find funny. I'm all for protecting our countryside, but everyone should be taking their fair share, as long as the infrastructure is built with it. But generally well to do areas that think they can protest to stop building should be told to get a boat to France.
If they’ve got a chance of reviving themselves I think they need to be led by someone not so ridiculously populist and basically a Reform candidate. Constantly appealing to not a lot more than a demographic that is dying when so few have just voted for you isn’t a great recipe for success IMO.
This is why I am so concerned for the Tories. The membership, no offence to anyone on here, is getting older and older. They're so out of touch. The name I am seeing now is Robert Jenrick, if your first answer is "who?" I am right there with you, who the **** is Robert Jenrick. I laughed when I read about him and it said his nickname amongst Labour is "Robert Generic"
People will remember him as one of the ****ter people wheeled out for the Covid briefings once it all got a bit boring. He was in charge of housing and then immigration so we know he’s going to be great.
I think theyre facing a growing demographics issue, combined with a now poor record in two governments over the past two generations. The Major government was also a ****ing disaster, they barely got back into power at the very height of the financial crisis, they managed to stay in power through mostly Labours incompetence. From 2015-2024 there was no Liberal opposition either. As soon as they faced serious opposition, the entire party collapsed. Again. I'm gearing myself up for a Liberal Democrat opposition one day tbh, I honestly think the Tories are ****ed.
I've no idea the age of the Tory membership, I think it's probably more based around people's financial worth than age. Spoke to my lad last night, he knows I voted Labour and he is concerned how any future tax rises under Labour will affect him as he is a high earner. However, he said to me that NI should not have been reduced under the Tories and should have just been left alone. As for *Robert Generic, I certainly know of him, can't remember what's he was known for other than reading what Bwood has wrote. My memory of him is guy that's got a cock shoved down his throat, sorry I mean a plum stuck in his mouth when he talks. Just generally boring and I probably wouldn't trust him with emptying the *** butt bin. Edit: I spelt the name wrong but it seems more fitting so will leave it lol.
The NIMBY’S are going to have to suck it up if they are onside with the idea of house building. That said, I think the focus should be on using brownfield sites as well as reappropriating old office spaces, industrial units etc. I don’t know what the numbers are, but since Covid there are significantly less people going to physical work spaces and are instead working from home. I also think the planning laws around dwellings on private land need to be revisited as I think there’s a lot of scope for self builds and a mix of different styles of housing. It doesn’t all have to be identikit boxes on a brand new housing estate That said, as you point out. The infrastructure needs to go alongside all of this. Water, sewage, electric, roads, schools, GP surgeries, hospitals etc on it goes. It’s a massive task, but it’s an ambition the govt should absolutely be taking on.
So is it all sunshine, flowers and singing birds in the trees now the conservatives are out? Everyone get a 50% pay rise overnight. /Sorry I'm a modern football fan, I expect change to be instantaneous
I mean not the average member but the Tories in the 19 something club it's called. They're a small minority who vote on big issues, theyre like the Tory "club" if you get me. It's not like Labour were the average member gets a vote
