We obviously aren't going to go out and sign 40m worth of players tomorrow mate. But you're basically saying that we'd need both Greaves and Philogene to go down with significant injuries tomorrow. You think the club is allowing them to be at risk of that? Thanks to FFP though we'd need to spend 200m on players on 5 year deals to offset the income of the pair in this year, so the risk is pretty minimal.

All fair points. But I still feel very calm about it all. I think we have made lots of good moves with the outgoings and we will likely get a good price for both Greaves and Philogene (as much as I’ll miss having them here). We can bring in a set of quality players who can create a new, fresh, positive atmosphere and togetherness. I think having not too many, but happy players still here (Coyle for example) who can welcome them and show them what our club is about will be very beneficial. The new players will also have a good chance of starting games straight away rather than having to wait.

Do you think we’ll sign the same players, if the budget is £15m, £25m or £40m?

The deal we ultimately do will determine if we’re shopping at Waitrose or Sainsbury’s.

No doubt there’s some deals that we’re working on that won’t be significantly impacted by the sales, but key ones definitely will be.

I think there'll be a number of players signed this summer regardless of Philogene or Greaves going who we should be working on bringing in regardless of those two deals.

Especially if as M88 claims we knew Philogene and Greaves were going, those deals should be progressing regardless.

It could well be that the day we announce their sales, we announce 4-5 players signing who were waiting to sign for all the fees to line up, but somehow I doubt that's going to be the case.

As I pointed out above, we also have 13m of allowable losses this season, as well as the fact we've just brought in 3m or so in fees for Tufan and Allsop. We can begin making moves.

We've already spent £1.5m on the new pitch and a fair whack sacking Rosie and his staff. I can't imagine Walter and his staff are too cheap either.

£13m loss doesn't go that far when we don't get crazy money for commercial deals (although they are increasing), cheap tickets and a hefty wage bill.

The pitch is not under FFP and Rosenior was sacked in the previous financial year.

13m loss goes a bit further than hiring a coach from Germany and dismissing a previous manager.

The suggestion seems to be that if we weren't selling Philogene and Greaves we'd have no money at all to spend which is utterly daft.

I think people - as Geo said - are trying to come up with reasons to justify why we haven't signed anyone and that's perfectly understandable, but sometimes it is ok to just say "We have a lot of signings to make in order to be competitive".

As Baz said, if the season started tomorrow we'd be battling relegation. Luckily it doesn't, but let's see where we are in a few weeks.

This is the ultimate point. It really is too early to be worrying. UTT.

It's too early to worry and write off the season, but I think it's reasonable to want to see players in early so that the squad has time to gel before the first game. We'll be sat here in April saying "well such and such will be better next season with a full pre-season with us" otherwise.

I agree. We could sign a couple of players at £2-3 million a piece in transfer fees this afternoon and it wouldn’t be an issue. This whole ‘we have to wait until Greaves and Philogene officially leave’ is disingenuous. Coventry were prepared to spend £5 million on Stamenić as Sheaf’s replacement before even selling Sheaf and would’ve signed him if the player didn’t decide to go to Forest instead.

You can be difficult if you want, I was just pointing out that it's hard to create a team ready to challenge without selling players, especially as we don't generate much from ticket sales or commercial deals. A £13m loss doesn't go far, especially with our income as a football club.

We really wouldn't have a lot, no. It would be a lot less than we had last season.

I'm not being difficult, I'm pointing out facts. I am not demanding we create a team ready to challenge, I'm asking for the club to begin replacing the players that have gone. Docherty, Traore and Morton all leaving, for instance, leave a whole in central midfield. We were happy to let the former two leave at the expiry of their contracts, but have seemingly - I stress that word - made no immediate move to replace their positions in the squad. Those positions - depth, bench roles - would not be expensive and would not be dependent on Jaden and Greaves going.

A 13m loss goes plenty far, and using it as the defence for why we have to wait for two players to be sold is disingenuous, as Kalman suggested.

I seem to recall rumours that Clough tried hard to prize away Waggy & C.C. as a package when he was at Derby ?
Had that attempt succeeded, it's possible K.W. and C.C. may well have attained international call-ups & caps for England !

Should also point out that if we sell Greaves and Philogene, we won’t get £35 million+ in the club’s account straight away. Even discounting add-ons, the base fee will be paid in instalments anyway.

It really doesn’t matter if we sign players before or after selling Greaves and Philogene for FFP purposes anyway. As long as we sell them at some point this financial year, it will cover any potential incomings’ amortised transfer fees and wages.

Of course it would be a lot less, our headroom has diminished because we made no significant sale last season. We do however have the ability to sign players to replace the depth we have lost. As to first team, promotion challengers, those can wait until we have offers accepted on Jaden and Jacob.

For context though, we had 18m of income in 22/23 which will have substantially increased this season, which means we have 31m to spend, taking everything into account. That's ignoring any player sales on top of that. Our wage bill has trimmed substantially as well.
