Labour now need to get stuff done as although had a lot of support - a lot of it is from people that just wanted the Tories out and will be more than happy to bash Labour if not delivering rather than just blindly support them no matter what.

Think can see by the number of Lib Dem seats that this election was just about voting against the Tories in a lot of places

What happened in Leicester East? The only place the Tories gained a seat.

Must be crushing for the Lab candidate to see a huge backlash against the govt, not only can't you beat a tory but actually lose the seat to them.

First non labour seat in over 3 decades as well. God knows what the labourer candidate did there, takes some doing to lose what is a pretty safe seat then <laugh>

Looks like the previous MP (Claudia Webber) switched parties. Started as Labour (actually elected as Labour in 2019) but switched to Independent in September 2020. Maybe they felt burnt?

They elected a Labour MP in 2019, she just switched affiliation within a year of being elected

So the next bunch of lying toe rags take power. I can’t recall the last time there was a politician that I had respect for.

I think you just have to go further down the chain. i like to think when you get to the local Mp’s they’re the ones that are doing it for the good of your local area and can make improvements on a small scale which you hope then feeds up the chain.

Mps have a constituency to represent when making law. Nothing more.

Councillors.have a job at local level to make local decisions.

Government ministers have a national executive job to hand out money and set policy.

Mps should not be working local issues but working on genuine legislative matters to advice thr betterment of the nation.

Aka deleting that Rwanda bill on Monday.

The funny thing is... when the conservatives took power 14 years ago they were fairly moderate... not that different to today's Labour and then they drifted way to the right over time. Labour starting out, not all that different to Conservatives looked 14 years ago. Will they stay fairly central or are they going to drift?

I'm hoping they drift, but not into silly territory.

Our local MP (Ben Bradley) was a breath of fresh air in our community over the last seven years. As a Tory, he's booted voted out now but it's a shame because he truly was great for the area (my area of work means I work alongside them on a fairly regular basis).

Can't see the newly elected Labour MP having the same impact but I'll give him the benefit of doubt and see what it brings to the table.

100% wanted Tories out but certainly wasn't backing any of the other parties to do a outstanding job either.

(Ben was MP in my working area, he's wasn't the MP where I live)

think that’s sometimes an issue, might have a really good one locally but because working under a conservative name doesn’t get in because people don’t want them to stay in power.

How many people voting labour actually voted for Starmer? Tiny fraction that live in his area that’s all.

Do feel almost need 2 votes. One for your local MP and another on who you want to run the country.

Id imagine you’d get a lot better voting in those cases as I may want my local Mp to be from X because they’re bloody good, but doesn’t mean I want Y to be the prime minister.

It's a monarchy. You don't get a vote on the king you serf!

If you want a president go to France.

System doesn't work any better there.

What are you on about? No one is talking about the monarchy and the king?

Monarch doesn't rule the country. They have ceremonial powers only and if they ever tried to take matters into their own hands, it would stop being a monarchy pretty quickly. But yes... can't vote for direct leader in a parliamentary system that doesn't have a executive head because party is free to ignore you, you could perhaps vote and say you want Garlic Klopp to be head of the party, but if all the ruling party decide to follow Dribs instead- then Dribs is going to be the real PM and Garlic Klopp is just a figure head.

Regarding President or Monarch... both suck and you can get lumped with idiots... but I'd rather a chosen idiot than one forced on me... That said, I think its better when they don't have too much power. I think a President with slightly more power than our figure head King but nowhere near as powerful as the US President is ideal.

    Read the rules.

The king owns everything and just signs it over for safe keeping

Not in practice. If the King tried enforcing any of that he would be kicked out very quickly. The reason they stay so quiet on politics and step back these days is they know they don't really hold any power and if they tried being more than ceremonial they would be out on their arses. The real power is with the country and the government.

If Charles tried to disband parliament today and said "My Brother Andrew is going to act as PM from now on," how many people do you think would take him seriously, listen to him, or take his side? There would be a mini crisis- because the army is sworn to defend the King, and parliamentary members swear loyalty to the King, but if he tried to claim any real power, few people would take his side and Parliament would go on meeting and making laws. Those oaths would be broken.
