What is the point in having these academies if you wont pay to retain the top talent? We invest heavily to get the odd gem but when we have an england youth captain and one of the top 16 year old strikers in the country we let them go. Obviously it depends on what the wages are, but when you look at what we pay first teamers surely its worth it for the very top youngsters.
Not sure what our wage structure is but these 2 seem like players we should be keeping hold of. Chelsea pay academy players more than we pay first teamers so can see why they would want to leave, we might need to take a look at the pay structure otherwise there isn’t really any point in having a top academy as only late bloomers might make it to the first team for us
We've lost in the last couple of seasons: Jimmy Jay Morgan Kamari Doyle Tyler Dibling (though he did come back) Max Alleyene And now Harrison Miles & Alejandro Gomes are leaving. And those are just the ones we know about. It's incredibly frustrating when you have these top, top talents coming through, and we can't seem to keep hold of them. I wish we'd put some more effort and money into keeping our own happy as we do with courting others. It's all well and good signing the likes of SAA & Meghoma, but (as rumours suggest) they're on more wages then our own academy players, it's no wonder our own players want to be on the same or similar wages, and yet we seem unwilling to do so.
We just don’t know enough about the money side to really know. Chelsea have been known to pay 18 year olds £50k a week, which we just can’t compete with. There was a report that an academy player was on £20k a week there which again we can’t compete with as it goes all the way up.
We’ll probably buy them back when not Yep. 3 highly rated English CB’s. Good business. And on the youngsters leaving because they think they’ve made it at 15/16, good luck to them and there bank balances but they’ll probably end up back here in 3-5 years time on loan or a buy back deal
Yeah we should be targeting the 18 year olds finishing the academy at the big clubs as there will be a lot who will be looking to leave for opportunities. Who really cares if they have been with us since 7 or whatever
This is why Rasmus and Phil Giles closed the Brentford academy and just set about creating a good B Team.
Good we hopefully have lots of money left, only really means anything if we spend it though. Unless we are right up against it PSR wise
Yep, although of course slightly more complicated for a club with Brentford's profile operating in the saturated London area
Will mean ABK is off I expect. If both initial fees are 3m then that does seem good. Especially as Swansea were trying to get 12m last year (apparently) Quick business it seems
Now they’ve binned that whole 90 minute from home rule that used to be in operation you could argue it’s pointless for most PL clubs if they are trying to bring through players for the first team. Worth it for clubs looking for a bit of an income boost
I recall a certain Sir Alex Ferguson refusing to budge on wages for Paul Pogba. SAF's view was how could a player that hadn't even broken into the first team demand a first team wage. He didn't suffer fools gladly. A line has to be drawn somewhere because otherwise you end up upping the wages of all the players to ensure the balance in the squad (think of the Rooney clause that ensured he was always the highest earner). It's not sustainable. Not all that long ago, we had an academy player hold us to a bit of blackmail ... if he didn't start playing soon, he'd be off somewhere else. He played. He got sent off within a few minutes and was never seen nor heard of again! He believed the hype surrounding him, kicked up a stink, got his way and then duly f'ed it up! Alexandre Jankewitz.
