Overuse of business (both general business and football specific) buzzwords is always a red flag, in my opinion. Too easy to hide behind. Usually invented to make stupid people feel clever, in my experience.

    Not bothered about accents.

I would lose respect for him if he changed. There's no need to, people need to understand him not the other way round

But thats how they talk in football circles, so why should he change when talking to fans?

he doesn’t need to change, just alter language. That’s not changing, it’s adapting to your audience. You can keep the same beliefs, actions and values.

Like I say yesterday was a lot better as the admission of fault suggests authenticity.

you’ve said language and words don’t matter but you’d “lose respect for him” if he changed his language?

he doesn’t need to change what he does or how he does it. But language does matter and it’s a hill I’m willing to die on as my profession depends on it :D

Let me just run that one up the flagpole and circle back once I've checked my synergy with the group by doing some blue sky thinking and pushing the envelope for low hanging fruit to move the needle here.

When people first started criticising Johnson for speaking the way he did I was a little taken aback. He was talking in much the same way as coaches I know do and I tried to point this out. It seemed to me that he was trying to speak to fans as if they were on the same level as him, assuming that they had the same level of knowledge, in short, speaking to them as equals. I feel the same when Speakman does it.

Every job/industry/sector has its own jargon (mine certainly does!) but it surprises me that people aren't as familiar with the jargon used within football when it's such a popular form of entertainment. Some of it is quite cringey, and there are certain people that I will take the piss out of if they use it too much. There are others who I know who try to avoid the clichés. But there is a certain way that people communicate within the game.

I never said words and language don't matter. They do matter, I don't want things to be dumbed down, I want him to talk to the fans the same way he would talk to Harvey or RLB, so we actually learn something.

I wasn't a fan of the interview yesterday.

Let me just realign your expectations to remove the pain point and get a quick win while staying agile doing the deep dive.

Meetings are always fun when I'm involved, if that's what you mean ;)

Johnson gets stick for it but POMO is such a well known thing in the game. It works as well, his record with strikers is excellent.

I'm not sure performing for an audience is his job tbh.

He's not primarily a media spokesman or professional mouthpiece for the club. Let's be honest some people will never be happy with what's said ...

... if it makes perfect sense, and put forward in a way that can't possibly annoy anyone, they'll just come back with 'Action needed, not words."

It's a waste of time trying to appease people so negative and set in their ways. Whatever is said will be subjected to a forensic examination until a smoking gun is found ...

... which will then be sent off for fingerprinting <laugh>

The problem is there is not enough evidence to say he can not and for me he came into a team which was not favorable but was on its knees, and had barely held on to its cat 1 academy status and in a little over 3 years we now have the foundations to build from the ground up with a thriving academy and a good young squad. The test will be can he and the club start taking the next steps. For me he has earned the right to try. Did we concentrate too much on youth, yes I believe we did but I can see the reasoning for it, will it bear fruit, who knows only time will tell.

I work in a specialised field and am often required to communicate information to people from outside of that field. There are various concepts that cannot be easily conveyed without long-winded explanations. It is better to assume that the audience has a certain degree of knowledge and to use the accepted terminology for these concepts, setting them in a context that helps to clarify their meaning. The audience can then look up the meaning of these words later or ask me outright, depending on what is more appropriate. When the audience has a pre-existing interest in the subject (they don't always, depending on the circumstances), this approach works well. That's essentially the situation that Speakman finds himself in. No one (or very few people) who has no interest in football is going to spend the time listening to him talk about football.

Positions of maximum opportunity. Basically just getting the strikers into better positions and knowing when as a team to feed them.
