He's all about 'Tournament' football. ie don't lose, not try to win, but do not lose. This is how Mourinho set out his teams all those years ago, it was effective as you say 10-15 years ago, but just follow what has happened to all those managers who employed this style of football back then. They've been left behind, Mourinho, it's architect, has bounce around clubs being sacked when fans get fed up with boring football.

Problem is Southgate took this idea, as that was what was winning tournaments at the time he got the job, and has stuck with it despite the game moving on, but he hasn't got the managerial ability to change and adapt to the new type of players his squad is made up of.

Wasn't talking about formation, more style and plan.

Rafa has also gone the way of Mourinho. Pragmatic defensive football is dead.

Mourinho took massive pride in his undefeatable myth at Stamford Bridge but in the end its mega money and oil shields that sterling outcomes.

Did or did not real Madrid **** house the cl final? Did they not do the same to city?

    Nope.

Slovakia also beat Belgium, and Switzerland nearly beat Germany. They're just not bad teams, and Switzerland are playing very well.

Georgia were more of an underdog; they only really got through because they beat Portugal's B team.

They are all good at packing a bus and fitness and stamina are no longer a separator in terms of quality.

Belgium should and could have tonked slovakia

The reality is thst the lack of shape for England plus the fear of losing is telling.

Southgate can fix one of those.

Only the players can fix the other

Great goal from Bellingham (to keep me in it) but what a lacklustre performance - again. They played with confidence in extra time knowing that Slovakia weren’t likely to score. Will they carry this forward into the next game? It’s amazing how Southgate can turn exciting players into robotic dullards.

Did we play with confidence? We scored in first minute and then sat back for 29 mins hoping to keep it 2-1.

    Southgate had no confidence anyway.

He immediately changed it at 1-1 to move saka away from lb.

That 352 they started out with with saka rwb didn't last long at all.

They pulled everyone back in a 5 and then got players on to be.more defensive.

Slovakia were largely shot but still managed two really good chances that were not converted in extra time. If that's comfortable OK then.

I think we did in extra time. The change in demeanour was very apparent.

Just noticed @SIR_KENNY_KLOPP_KING got his prediction correct with Denmark. So Denmark got him 12 points. (2 for group stage elimination and 10 for correct prediction) With Swiss still in in- and guaranteed at least 3 points for reaching QF- means SKKK guaranteed at least 15 points. (which knocks me out of the running- max I can get is 13 if Turkey get eliminated in group of 16 :( ).

Hm Dno I thought as soon as we went 2-1 up we sat back and only time remember us going forward was in final few minutes when Toney had the shot on the counter. Otherwise seemed like was back to the walls defending again.

Two goals with only two shots on target. That tells a story all by itself.

They pointed out on German TV yesterday that it was 10 years to the day since Germany beat Algeria in extra time following a similarly uninspiring performance. Per Mertesacker was quite tetchy in the post-match Interview and when asked about the poor performance responded quite annoyed whether the reporter would prefer to play pretty and go out or have a performance like that and go through.

Something to cling to maybe. Though right now I make the Swiss favourites.

Yeh bcos of course it's not possible to do both. It's always a weak argument imo. Like those of us who want a better performance actually want us to lose.

It's a false dichotomy - you can also play pretty and win, or you can be crap and lose.
