The problem (albeit a good problem) is that I think we can be this lucky again. Or rather, I think Southgate can be this lucky again. He can't be lucky enough to take us all the way to win it. But he can be lucky enough to take us deeper than he ever deserves.
I mean… it’s ****ing abysmal all round. But somehow we won. We have the players. We just need the manager & the tactics
It was almost as bad as the first 95 minutes. We'd scored two goals in about two minutes. Our tails were up. Slovakia were on the floor. So go for the kill and get the third! If it doesn't come, then fine, man the barricades for the final few minutes...but don't drop back immediately after taking the lead! A better team punishes us for that (as we've seen before under Gareth).
I thought we managed ET well enough. Toney was a handful. But how can Southgate stick to the same tactics? Ditch Trippier, start Palmer instead of Foden. Can't drop Bellingham - while his performances have been poor, he's popped up with 2 huge goals. Foden inexcusably got himself offside for his moment. At least Mainoo will continue to start now.
He will continue to play the same 11 and the same way. He is not imaginative enough to tweak his philosophy, if he was he would have had a major trophy by now
