Here's one only the French would think of. It's a video replay of the 1996 Prix d'Amérique at Vincennes won by Coktail Jet. No commentary as such, but the race is accompanied by a nice little jazz piano group! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgeZtJM1jQg Lovely closing shot of the winner; really does show the art of a high-class trotter. Driver, Jean-Etienne Dubois, seems chuffed too! (There's an error on the actual video right at the very end, the guy has mistyped it as the 1966 running (Winner: Roquépine), but it's definitely the 1996 renewal).
Thanks Swanny, sure did look happy when crossing the line, and the jazz music was good also.Good to see you taking an interest in the old trotters and pacers
Found this on Youtube. Amazing. I've seen film of this kind of stuff in the past, but it took me a while to hunt some down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHjeOXCav8E&feature=related
Cyc: They always have one or two Monté races at Vincennes and the other French trotting tracks. To ride a trotter at full speed is really an art, no kidding, so don't let anyone tell you these drivers cannot actually ride a horse, and 2850m certainly is an extreme distance for this gait at the mount. Not so long ago they rode more upright, but they now seem to adopt a slight crouch? Was never a good betting proposition for me. Clearly remember one big Monté race at Vincennes years ago, stood to win about a coupla thousand Deutschemark. The hoss shot into the straight with a healthy lead, nothing looked to have a chance behind, and then the bloody thing broke stride and took off into the inner ring. It was Bierfest time, so went straight there and got well ****ed! Tks for clip, excellent!
I have so many questions!! What the ****? This has been added to my list: I have to see, and bet on, one of these races live. OMG! That's my lunch break sorted, cruising youtube for more of the same. Here's the first one i've found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSPMzw52OAo it just looks so ridiculous.
Just had another look at the vid I posted. I missed it the first time around, but it was one hell of a ride by the winning joc. Cold in the straight.
Thanks guys that was great, now i,m off to make my fortune introducing Canadian standard bred followers to MONTE racing.
Each to their own Cyc - looks completely gay to me. Give em some pink frills and the jockeys a handbag and it will be on a par with turkish wrestling for campness
Oddy: Why don't you try a short Monté ride? I am sure one of the French harness trainers will fix you up (maybe even a local one in Berlin) for a short trial run. Might look gay, but it ain't! (Oh, make sure you are wearing your cricket accessory - but no pink ribbons and handbag necessary).
