Me neither although you can obviously never know for sure. Alex was excellent in those last few games and there's no chance Martin would have dropped Bazunu.
He made a few saves in the West Brom games that kept us in it, who knows if Bazunu would’ve made. Also we looked a lot more assured not ****ing around at the back as we knew McCarthy is crap with his feet, we provably wouldve conceded at least one from playing out over the course of the playoffs Plus we may not have switched to a back 3 which seemed to help as well So yeah I reckon we would’ve lost to West Brom if Bazunu wasn’t injured
For me it was the late save at Wembley in stoppage time. Low in the corner, down to keepers left. Exactly the sort of shot Gav rarely saves.
Good - I`ve never understood the angst against him. That game against Brighton where he picked up an injury that lead to their equaliser may have something to do with it ?
Wasn't/isn't McCarthy one of our highest paid players? I'm guessing he'll be getting an uplift on his salary too... I get that McCarthy dug us out of a hole and helped get us back in the Premier League, but I have serious reservations about his ability at this level. Also, getting his wages off our books and bringing in a loan for the season would, to me at least, have made better sense. We could then re-evaluate which league we're in and sign a longer term goalkeeper.
I don’t understand our stance on keepers McCarthy’s situation was an opportunity to get a massive wage off our books for a very average keeper and Baz was statistically the worst keeper in the Championship ( most of us didn’t need stats to realise that) We need a new first choice keeper, could of got the Rotherham keeper for £1m who was statistically the best keeper in the Championship and who was amazing against us
I think it’s quite obvious tbh. The club obviously highly rates Bazunu and thinks he will come good (rightly or wrongly, he is only 22 after all). With his injury they need someone to fill in for him next season. McCarthy knows the club and did well in the run in last season so seems an obvious choice to give an extension to (I’m assuming it’s max 2 years with some understanding that he is only going to be first choice this year) The only other realistic options were to find a keeper happy to take a one year deal, most likely one without a club. Or try and find a loanee. Presumably the club explored these options and decided giving McCarthy a new deal was the best option. We may still sign a keeper that fit those criteria to compete with McCarthy, it’s too early to tell. But signing a young keeper on a multi year deal is just never going to happen this summer
Going into a PL season with just McCarthy & Lumley is, in my opinion, utter suicide. We have got to get another keeper in.
Helped me win the PL as the Saints keeper with a record number of clean sheets on Football Manager a couple of years back. What a player.
