Not Spurs related, but would be interesting to guage opinion, and also get to know more about other users sporting interests. Speaking to friends it seems this year's contenders have split opinion quite a lot, there are a few deserving candidates.

    The contenders:

    Mark Cavendish
    Darren Clarke
    Alastair Cook
    Luke Donald
    Mo Farah
    Dai Greene
    Amir Khan
    Rory McIlroy
    Andy Murray
    Andrew Strauss

I'd go for Darren Clarke without a shadow of a doubt. Was at the Open this year for all four days and it has to be one of the greatest sporting moments I've witnessed. A complete underdog who many had written off completely, famed for his drinking and smoking in an increasingly athletic sport, winning in the pissing rain while all the favourites dropped off. And to top it off on the back of the personal tragedy of his wife dying. Truly a romantic sporting moment which brought me to tears.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Cavendish seems to be the favourite.

Mo Farah. Just for the fact it would piss off the EDL and BNP.

i would go for Cavendish for his amazing display not only in the tour de France but the follow up with the world champs.

there are plenty of potential winners there but i'd take Andy Murray off for one, this should be about a general winner, and it's not him yet (hope he does)

the only one close i could put is Mo Farah really, looking at the records set, then silver in the 10k and then winning the 5k. tough choice but either Cav or Mo

Strauss has taken his team to the top test nation over the past 3/4 years. If it's purely based on this year then I guess he shouldn't get it.

Has to be Farah - despite his misguided football support! Clarke's win was special, but has the feel of a one-off, he was ****e before then and has been ****e since. McIlroy is farmore deserving.

Farah has been faced with huge superiority from African nations, but instead of accepting it, he learned from then and then caught them up. An amazing transformation. To then beat them over 5k at the world champs was staggering.

Murray, Donald, Cavendish should not win, because they have not won anything like a major championship, despite great performances over the year.

I'd say Darren Clarke, he has to be the least pretentious golfer ever, just another bloke from down the pub. I can't imagine anyone not liking him. <ok>

    No Joey Barton?

His criticism of TOWIE was a personal highlight. The scoreline gesture to Wolves was amusing too.

From the list, I'd choose Mo Farah. For the simple reason of I don't follow cricket or golf and therefore haven't a clue who's done well and Amir Khan just p*sses me off. Mo Farah has been a credit to us on the track, VOTE MO!

Given how the Principality tends to block vote on the winner every single year, the Welsh bloke.

That's the general public's view. It's wrong. Cav won the World Road Champs, and the Maillot Verde - arguably the greatest achievement for a sprinter in road cycling.

Another thing, he's consistent. Does well in the 'Tour every year, and has been on the short list for several years running.

Fair enough, cycling's not something I know much about. But my point about Murray and Donald stands, even though both had fantastic seasons.

Nonsense, hasn't Andy Murray won it? I know Lewis Hamilton has and he's dull as Mick McCarthy narrating the fishing channel :emoticon-0113-sleep

Farah did the Lawrenson prediction thing the other day and he publicly admitted to his shameful allegiance.
Definitely a Gooner, though he appeared a little clueless.
That's probably another hint, isn't it?

did Beckham win, or get placed too? Beckham has the dullest personality known to man. He's put me in 3 comas just by speaking. I'm glad he left the country.
