I don't see a link to Hamas, but then again I'm only reading the words on the flyer not adding my own narrative. What exactly is the issue with wanting everything that is on that list?
Do you not find it a little distasteful that a British MP would centre her campaign around a highly complex foreign conflict? Just focus on the local issues ffs. Unless, of course, Rotherham is perfect
Didn't Labour "get in to bed with the IRA and used that as method to turn things around politcally"? Means to an end, method in their madness... Nah! couldn't be true, just ignor me.
I just think when we saw the threatening of Labour MPs by the mob, including Muslim MPs…protesting their homes, vandalising their offices and spreading antisemitic and Islamophobic and just generally racist content simply because some of them had the gall to criticise Hamas after 7/10 (see Rushanara Ali and Mahmood, for example) that it’s a very slippery slope to campaign solely on a foreign war as it just stokes hate and division both locally and more nationally.
And the dozens funded by Qatar? just like our universities? The Israel lobby gets a disproportionate amount of attention compared to the funding provided by other lobbies and foreign states. Wonder why that is…
Probably because it is very visible and people are currently uncomfortable by the number of civilians being killed in Gaza currently.
Yet her flyer says nothing about war. It is entirely about peace, getting aid to people who need it, freeing hostages and obeying international law. I just find it something that Palestinians are now so dehumanised that any of her expressed views are remotely controversial. There are 4 million muslims in this country who see people like them being slaughtered and want it to stop. To me that seems a valid enough reason to campaign that way. This is not a one note issue where: Israel = good and Palestine = bad or vice versa. There are human beings dying who don’t need to die.
But not uncomfortable with Qatar housing in luxury and funding the very organisation responsible? Startling.
I don’t disagree with a word you’ve just said. But I still feel campaigning under the flag of another territory is just distasteful. That’s all. I think an MP campaigning under an Israeli flag calling for Hamas to be eradicated so realistic peace conversations can take place would also be misplaced despite the fact that I would agree with the sentiment.
Why is it either/or with you? What do Qatar care about the people of Palestine? All they care about is making Israel look bad. Which they are doing. Israel, as I said over and over, are fighting a war on innocents that their enemies are absolutely delighted they are fighting. They will keep putting hostages in classrooms and churches and hospitals and Israel will keep blowing them up. It is the most moronic military campaign in history. I think Lord Melchitt is running it.
Rotherham has a large Muslim population, and rightly or wrongly, British Muslims tend to feel as emotionally involved in the current conflict, as do British Jews. Maybe the MP for Rotherham should concentrate on local issues, but to many of her constituents, the loss of civilian lives in Gaza is an issue they care about deeply. Either way, I don’t see anything printed on that flyer that the majority of people watching this tragedy unfold, would find objectionable. Unless you mean the use of the Palestinian flag colours, which could be considered ill judged.
That’s exactly the point. It’s not either or with me at all. I am uncomfortable with any foreign intervention. Nor do I think this has anything to do with the war. The fact that the Israeli lobby is given such disproportionate airtime by people (including before the war) that have never once questioned other, better funded lobbying groups is something I just find very telling about people’s ideology.
Blair and new Labour completely realigned the political compass of the UK. Every election since then bar the 2019 brexit election has been fought over the middle ground. Tories have to be progressive and have to be more socially liberal, literally as a result of new Labour. Cameron, (Clegg), May, Johnson and Sunak are all socially progressive people and were whilst leading the Conservative party. We are about to see what happens to a party that lurches away from the middle ground, in the same way we saw what happened to labour with the god awful Corbyn. Worst election result in a century in bound.
I was responding to the above mention of the “friends for Israel lobbying group.” My post was a direct response to this being mentioned lol. My point is that if this is the only overseas lobbying group you’ve ever mentioned, it’s highly likely you’re playing into some pretty grim tropes that are centuries old.
