Ah right. Like you say, it was unproven so those that just assume it to be true probably just don't like the guy. I was referring purely to his athletic ability anyway, he is incredible in that regard - not many can even compare.
He is amongst the best but certainly not "quite comfortably the greatest athlete of all time" as claimed. His petulant behaviour detracts from his legendary status, he is really up himself. "Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time and is a legend of the game, but he can also be a massive crybaby. Criticism can be aimed at anyone, no matter how good you are or how much you’ve accomplished, and responding to this criticism is a good way of seeing the mindset of players." "Some respond with silence and let their performances do the talking. Others speak out, but then deliver on the pitch, while some throw a massive strop. Ronaldo has both responded on the pitch and thrown a tantrum in his long and glittering career, and we’ve picked out the best incidents where he had a moan after being criticised." https://www.planetfootball.com/quic...n-transfermarkt-manchester-united-real-madrid
In my view, and many others, he is. To be clear, when I said greatest athlete I was referencing purely his athletic ability, not his attitude or technique. You may think he is up himself, petulant or whatever, but that has nothing to do with his athletic performance. I can't think of anyone, in any sport, that has not only achieved his level of physical performance but maintained it for 20 years at the very top. His longevity is remarkable.

Three players, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, each has been considered to be among the greatest players of all time. The trio have dominated men's singles tennis for two decades, collectively winning 66 major singles tournaments; Djokovic leads with an all-time record of 24 titles, followed by Nadal with 22 and Federer with 20. They have been ranked as world No. 1s in singles for a total of 947 weeks (equivalent to 18 years); Djokovic for a record 428 weeks, Federer for 310, and Nadal for 209. One of the three finished the season as the year-end No. 1 player every year from 2004 to 2023, with the exceptions of 2016 and 2022.
This is getting off topic now. If you want to carry on this discussion please use the General Sports thread. Keep this thread to Euro 2024 chat please.
Djokovic is certainly a candidate for greatest athlete, and is definitely comparable to Ronaldo, especially when you consider the sheer length of a tennis match, and the time actually spent playing during a tournament compared to a footballer. Plus tennis players play 4 major tournaments and a myriad of smaller ones every year.
I suspect we now have one of the two groups where the 3rd place side won't be qualifying. That's presumably why those few minutes after the equaliser were so crazy. A point was of little use to either side.
It would require either Croatia to beat Italy or Albania to beat Spain for there to be 3 teams progressing. Unlikely but not impossible. Croatia have been pretty poor so far but they could upset Italy with the players they have.
