Ramsey didn’t. He put players in who suited the way he wanted to play. Players from Fulham, Huddersfield, Blackpool…And Jack Charlton had reached a ripe old age before being picked to play for England. Who else would have picked Nobby Stiles?
I’ll take it. We’ve only ever won one opening game in the Euros. You can’t win a tournament in your first game but you can put yourself under pressure to qualify. Ease our way in and save energy.

A win’s a win and we showed resilience but let’s be honest, that was poor. This is down to coaching imo. Southgate is content to go one nil up and spend 2/3 of the game on the ropes defending deep. That isn’t how most of this squad play for their clubs.
What worries me is lessons don’t appear to have been learnt. Serbia dominated the last 20 minutes of the first half and the first 20 minutes( at least) of the second half and Southgate just sat there and did **** all about it. When he did make a change it wasn’t an attacking one, of course it wasn’t, how could it be???? That was far from convincing.
Awful negative commentary on the BBC who seemed to be willing Serbia to score. I saw Pickford have to make one save all game, I also saw England players fouled time and time again, every time we went forward we were fouled and it was no surprise either. One game, one win, three points, clean sheet and top of the league, yet listening to the BBC commentary you'd think we were Scotland.
A win is a win,we take the 3 points and move on...But **** me,that was a hard watch and we simply can't play like that against any of the tournament's fancied sides.
