The Alex is good Where will you go then? Interesting situation to be supporting a team that represents a town you think is a **** hole
It's my hometown club and I've lived here my entire life. Doesn't mean it's not a ****hole. Didn't realise that to support a club you had to like the City too - a huge chunk of our support aren't even from Southampton. Bit of an odd comment that imo. Undecided yet btw but most likely option a rural part of Wales, or possibly abroad depending on my employment situation by then.
Excuse me! Where are the majority of Southampton fans from then, if not Southampton and South Hampshire? Jamaica??
I didn't say a majority I said a huge chunk, which in fairness is probably overstating it a bit, but we've always attracted considerable support from outside the city. Bournemouth and Winchester areas are the obvious examples.
Point taken but maybe I intérpreted your message as meaning they come from all over, rather than the región. To me Bournemouth has always been within Southampton's catchment area as what %.of people who are 30+ grew up supporting Bournemouth.
In what world is Bournemouth within Southampton?! And yeah I think you did misinterpret my post. I was response to a message saying it was odd that I supported team based in a city I believe to be a **** hole. My point being that many of our supporters aren't even from the city.
I failed to complete the sentence. It should have read within Southampton's catchment area for support. (30-35 miles?) So maybe the bulk of Southampton's support comes from a radius 50 miles, and would be akin to Norwich and Ipswich in that respect. As for the City of Southampton being oñe of the most refined, sophisticated and most pleasurable of cities to either live in or visit, why should I argue against the general concensus!
I did in the second part of my last reply but you must have missed that. Anyhow I am not disagreeing with your POV where Southampton fans come from either, just adding a bit of information that you found superflous. Have a great day and enjoy the next round of matches at the Euros!
I meant with regards to our support. My initial point was that we have many supporters who don't live in the City to which you replied talking about catchment areas which was irrelevant to the point. When did you last visit Southampton out of interest as I don't recognise your description of it? It really isn't a great city and has deteriorated massively in recent years. It has the 9th highest rate of violent crime in the entire UK when measured against population.
As a Canterbury Southampton supporter, who has never lived in Southampton, I do find a certain connection/love of the place when I go to games. I guess you get a different perspective of somewhere though when you live there 24/7
I get what you are saying. Lived in Bournemouth/Poole all my life, but there is a special something even if I go to West Quay for something. EDIT: It’s a bit like going to Napoli for me - My mother’s home town. I go there, I know it’s not home, but it feels special. I wouldn’t want to live in either place, but I feel an affinity to it.
I’ve never lived in Southampton but I’ve been visiting the place for most of my life for various reasons, including football. I think Southampton is just like pretty much any other city I’ve been to, there are some nice parts, and there are some ****ty parts. And like pretty much every place in the country, it has got a lot worse overall in recent years.
HMS Relegated by Christmas. Obviously, I hope not but can't help feeling we've got so far behind what would normally be our footballing peer group that next season is going to be painful. Southampton is a ****hole and for that we can thank a succession of visionless councils when there was opportunity to improve. The two big assets are the parks and the seafront, neither of them fully capitalised on. Many cities that are situated on rivers or the sea develop them because people like them and will spend time and money there. We got Ocean Village. I once saw a quote in an article about Southampton saying "it got the **** knocked out of it during the war and never fully recovered". Almost 80 years later and it still hasn't.
I also have never lived in Southampton, but lived down the line on the coast. Went to first match in 81/82, worked in Southampton in the late 80s and 90s and got hooked. Chilco is right, all city’s have good and **** hole areas.
Have never lived in Southampton and only visited for games and to see family on occasion. I think it’s a dump but I don’t think my family live in a particularly good part and as Chilco says most cities have good and **** bits
I wasn’t being that serious, just saying interesting The non-mushes may view their spiritual home as a sort of distant Mecca an be sure to visit at least once in their life I’m not one to rave about the city but I can give a positive spin as it’s where I’m from - Hence mentioning the Common and parks However, we’ve moved to Dorset, which is maybe a similar vibe to Wales so actions speak louder than words I wouldn’t want to live in any city these days, too many cars, too many chains, too much rubbish
