Alcaraz should be given the opportunity to replace Stuart as the midfielder who can change the direction of an attack just by spinning 180 and running with the ball. He is too talented to give up on and if there is any truth in us being interested in the Argentinian player Jeronimo Domina, he would have someone to mentor and help settle.
Yeah, Alcaraz regularly looked like our best attacker (granted, an incredibly low bar) in the relegation season, because he's very good in space. He looked less good under Martin in a very controlled possession setup, but next year having the ability to play on the counter is going to be pretty valuable again. We may aspire to monopolize the ball, but there will be plenty of circumstances where we're going to be really want someone who can break through the lines.
What was it that Martin also said about him, he couldn’t speak the language and his close mates who could speak Spanish had left (thinking Caballero, possibly others) so he didn’t understand “keep ball”. Martin said early on in the season that he was struggling to adjust, so maybe the move away was best for both parties
With the Lallana move thought it would be interesting to see how many squad spaces we have as I don’t think there is many. Players aged 21 or younger on the 31/08/24 don’t need to be registered: GK Bazunu Lumley Lis (not sure if he has gone out on loan again?) DEF KWP Bednarek THB Manning Lyanco Perraud Stephens Bree ABK DCC (think he’s already left but not 100%) Larios (u21) MID Smallbone Aribo Lallana Armstrong Fraser Sulemana Alcaraz (u21) Charles (u21) Edozie (u21) ATT Onuachu Stewart Mara So by my calculations we have 3 spaces left if everyone stays. Definitely need to be looking to free up space in the squad
Unfortunately probably the 2 worst players on that list have only just signed! Can see about half a dozen on there leaving anyway. And if Lis and DCC have already gone then obviously frees up a couple of spaces
Learnt our lesson according to Solak. Can’t sign young potentially exciting players. Older proven average at best is the new strategy
I really don't see the downside of signing a versatile player with plenty of PL experience on a free transfer, if it is true. There will be more exciting incomings I'm certain of that.
