Hull were 18th favourites to be promoted at the start of last season. History is being completely re-written with that squad. They got a good loan in Carvalho and everyone decided it was a top squad - maybe it looked like a top squad because Rosenior was getting the most out of them.
Yes, there is definitely more to it than just controlling possession. I wouldn't criticise you for preferring to watch a different style. I think there is evidence to suggest that a possession based, short passing approach is often associated with more successful teams. In part of course, that's because you need technically better players to play that way effectively.
Yeah my big doubt with Rosenior is can he turn possession into chances and goals. If he was a coach who had mastered both the possession domination and chance creation he wouldn't be out of a job and definitely wouldn't be being linked to us.
On paper Greaves, Morton, Seri, Philogene, Carvalho, Giles and Zaroury are exceptional for this level. Omur and Ohio should be very good too. Maybe even Tufan and Delap. He had the team performing better before half of those were brought in though so maybe too much change was inflicted in one go on a group that was doing already doing well.
This is what I don't get. Everyone saying they had a fantastic squad. They had 2 or 3 very good players, the rest were okay.
I'd prefer the club on fb or Instagram to have it private so they can post pics but no one is able to comment. Honestly when you read some of the comments they're embarrassing.
They had Carvalho, Delap, Zaroury, Giles, Morton, Vinagre and Twine all loaned from top tier teams… Philogene and Omur came in for close to £10m.. to add to the likes of Seri (better than any of our midfielders even at the age he is now), Tufan, Greaves, Slater who are all very good at this level. If you had to make a combined Xl of both squads last team Hull would have more players than us by far.
I did actually edit my post before you both replied to say that the thing I have the most issue with is how low they are on the graph rather than how far along to the right. I'm not against possession football per se, just when it doesn't progress the play at all and just becomes possession for possession's sake. I quite enjoyed watching Southampton play at times, Leicester less so and Hull not so much at all.
Twine is at best hot and cold - I don’t rate him, Zaroury’s talented but had a massive tail off and lost his place at Burnley and they slated his lack of effort. A number of those you mentioned are ‘inexperienced kids’ by our definition are they not ? They’re definitely young
Interesting graph, 13 teams in the two left quadrants and the highest placed finish was Preston in 10th, so passing sequences or lack thereof correlate a lot with league placing, it seems speed matters less comparing Leicester and Southampton (slow) against Leeds and Ipswich (fast), meaning success is more varied there. I'm not sure how much of this is intentional versus the calibre of player available, perhaps with our lot Rosenior would be able to increase the speed of our play compared to what he could do with the Hull players.
Thought your last point was interesting so thought id pull together a joint team and i had 5 of our players in it - i would have a 6th (cirkin) but didnt count him since he was injured for most of the season Patterson Hume ballard greaves giles/jacobs Neil morton Philogene carvalho clarke Delap (or tufan as a false 9) Cheated a little as clarke n philogene play the same position but both too good to leave out Harsh on seri but Neil was better than him n morton this yr n i perfer morton to seri They have some class championship players but also a lot of bang average players He did well last season imo, the 6 teams that finished above them all had better teams or squads (or in ipswichs case just an unreal season)
Vinagre played 10 games before he was recalled. Twine was so bad that his loan was cancelled (and he's never consistently performed above League 1). Zaroury played 12 games after barely playing football for the first half of the season. Delap's best season in the Championship before this season was 4 goals. Tufan is a 29 year old forward who scored 40 goals in his entire career. They had some good players for sure. Their squad might also be better than ours, but I'm not sure how relevant that is to his performance. They didn't have a squad that should have been certainties for the playoffs.
