Everyone who has been mentioned looks to have turned us down, 4 months the club have had, what would you call it?
By Alan Nixon Sunderland will have to pay a hefty compensation fee for QPR boss Marti Cifuentes. The Black Cats have switched their managerial search around dramatically in the last few days with the Spaniard a favourite of leading figures at the club. But Rangers will ask for a six figure fee for Cifuentes and Sunderland would have no option but to fork out. Dutchman Pascal Jansen has strangely slipped out of the race after a meeting last week. And Liam Rosenior also spoke with the seven man interview panel but is comfortable waiting on offers. Sunderland seem to have many opinions within their ranks with one experienced official keen on St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson and Stockport rising star Dave Challinor. The saga has also seen Bo Svensson go elsewhere and the elusive Will Still failed to commit either. In the past Sunderland boobed badly with Michael Beale while the appointment of Tony Mowbray was down to their chief scout knowing him from Blackburn Rovers. This chase has included input from adviser and Sky Sports pundit Dave Jones. Despite all of this expertise they are yet to get their man.
Probably cos its doesn't take 112 days to get a head coach, the simple fact its taken so long tells you its gone wrong and more than once
Hasn’t been much concrete reporting on who is or isn’t under consideration. Only Jansen, Robinson, and Chalinor that have had concrete statements. Rohl and Svensson both have confirmed jobs/deals. Maric and Still both alleged to have been offered the job then reported to have other opportunities that make it unlikely but not categorically out of the picture. Rosenior and Cifuentes really the only other names linked in any serious way.
4 months since Dodds took over for the 3rd time, whatever happened to the data driven recruitment. You can ignore all the rumours the fact is we still haven't recruited a head coach with pre season starting very soon.
When he got there they were 4th bottom and floundering. He got them comfortably safe. The next year he took them to 7th. By anyone's measure that shows he did a good job.
Good article on Cifuentes if anybody needs a distraction. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/dec/22/qpr-marti-cifuentes-manager-cruyff-championship
