Yeh the bloke who complained about Obama 'interfering' in another country's politics during the brexit referendum, is off to interfere in another country's politics.

I suppose in Nigel's case you go where the money takes you.

Hope he's ok there's more muslims there.

Took a bit of time on lunch to look up Labour's proposal for Government.

They're certainly proposals, but that's about it.

I like their idea for increased public spending to increase GDP, the idea is by the end of the Labour first term debt will have fallen in relation to GDP.

That's a good idea and I think it will work, it's modern economics. The Tory party are depressingly old fashioned.

The increase to workers rights, which is a massive reversal of the decisions made by the Tories. In the UK, new workers essentially have little protection until they're 2 years into the job. It's 6 months in most of Europe.

This decision will strengthen unions and make it easier for a worker to defend themselves from an employer. Good idea.

Apart from that, nothing too exciting

A "border force" aka tough on immigration, no different from the Sunak pledge and lacking in any detail.

Recruiting 6,500 teachers, doesn't even come close to closing the gap and doesn't really answer how this will be done. The issue is finding anyone willing to teach.

Nationalising the rails. It's a fig leaf to lefties, nationalising water is clearly what is needed and Labour won't touch it with a barge pole.

They're still the best option at an election, but underwhelming.

    Is the manifesto out?

It's interesting you should say that. I was watching a three part documentary on Thatcher last year. They showed that leading up to the 79 GE the tories didn't spell out much.

The philosophy was that Labour and the country was in such a mess it was best not to, and just let Labour dig their own hole.

The Tory manifesto wasn't great on detail either. Lots of ideology on lowering taxes and inflation (which like now was rife) but not spelling out how. I remember in the documentary the one thing the manifesto did go heavy on was trade unions, which was seen as Labour's achilise heel so easy to attack and spell out what they would do differently. I can see Labour doing similar maybe with public services or government corruption.

But otherwise I can see why Labour are doing what they are.

An issue the Tories faced was less so proving that their policies were better than Labour's (due to how badly the country was doing) and more so to try and make Thatcher a candidate people could get behind.

She was simply not popular at all when running in '79.

It was also that many of their intended policies would've been hugely unpopular to the electorate. After they were elected the government's popularity sank like a stone by 1981 because of the hard route she took economically. It was the Falklands a year later which saved her.

I think there's a lot of similarities with Labour and Starmer and the state of the country.

Yeah, actually a quote of Thatchers that I do like was "You turn if you want too, the lady's not for turning." Due to the extreme public pressure and the rest of the Tory party wanting a U-turn.

I don't like her legacy, but I also did respect her ****ing hard nosed attitude. She was a tough old bird.

Apart from the Falklands, inflation did significantly go down, but that might have been her second term.

For many good reasons I'm sure.

She's a fascinating figure I think, if Thatcher was a man and on a different continent, she'd have been a dictator. She accepted no compromise, only her opinion and loathed any opposition. I don't think a British PM post war has ever actively sought out to crush opposition and destroy their actual voters lives like Thatcher did.

When I read about how she created local tax systems to specifically hurt areas Labour were in power and punish low income earners I was gobsmacked.

You can see how when she was PM the entire Tory party swinged in order to appease her changing opinions. Praised for speaking against apartheid South Africa, which the Tories didn't like ...suddenly refused to speak out against them and called the ANC terrorists.

Supported the ECC and then became an EUskeptic.

She was callous, stubborn, thick skinned, and completely incapable of self doubt. These are not good qualities in a leader, but people admired her for them anyway, because many of us Brits still have that 'masters and servants' mentality.
