Tottenham Hotspur host Bolton Wanderers (one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888-89) in the 14th round of Premier League matches on Saturday 3rd December 2011 (13th game for Spurs).

Spurs come into the game in third place in the table on 28 points after a run of 11 unbeaten matches in which they've won ten and drawn one, giving them their best start to a season since the 1960-61 "Double" was won. By contrast, Bolton have struggled this season and are in 18th place in the table on 9 points.

This will be the 103rd time the two teams have met.

The first meeting came at Northumberland Park in April 1898 when Spurs were playing in the Southern League in a friendly which was drawn 2-2. A further friendly was played at the same venue in November 1899 which Spurs won 4-0.

The clubs first met in Football League action during Tottenham's first season in the competition with Spurs winning both matches 2-1 at home and 1-0 away during 1908-09.

Both clubs were promoted to the First Division the next season and Spurs drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane and won 2-0 at Burnden Park.

The first FA Cup meeting came in the 2nd round (today's 4th round) in season 1924-25 with Bolton earning a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane but losing their home replay 1-0.

Bolton had the best of the first Football League Cup meeting between the clubs, winning 6-1 at home in the 4th round in November 1996.

Spurs got a 2-2 home draw in the first Premier League meeting in December 1995 and followed this with a 3-2 away win in March 1996.

During the 2009-10 season, Spurs took four points out of six off Bolton with a 2-2 away draw at the Reebok and a 1-0 win at the Lane.

The teams were also drawn together in the 5th round of the FA Cup with Spurs drawing 1-1 away and finishing the job 4-0 at the Lane, which included two Bolton own goals.

Bolton won last season's fixture at the Reebok Stadium in November 4-2 with a Kevin Davies brace and goals from Gretar Steinsson and Martin Petrov while Tottenham's goals came from Alan Hutton and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The return game at White Hart Lane in February 2001 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Rafael van der Vaart scored a 6th minute penalty but Bolton equalised through Daniel Sturridge, on loan from Chelsea, in the 55th minute. Niko Kranjcar's injury time thunderbolt ensured that all three points went to Tottenham.

Honours remain even during the Premier League Era with 9 wins each with 6 matches drawn.

Overall, Spurs have the edge over Bolton with 45 wins to 37 with 20 matches out of the 102 played so far drawn.

    Cheers 6061 <ok>

My two favourite Spurs Bolton games that I attended at the Lane both ended 1-0 for us.

Key victories in our promotion season in 76/77, and our recent 4th spot 09/10. Big crowds (50,000+ for the 2nd div game) important games, which we won by showing character and standing firm under pressure. Also Hudd's goal was an absolute beauty.

I was right behind the goal for Hudd's one, you could see me in the replays apparently <whistle>

My favourite was the year before, Arry's first game when I think we won 2-0. We got much needed points and optimism from that game and it meant that a few short weeks later we wouldn't be getting ridiculed as relegation fodder.

I notice that most of the scores are quite close but I still think a thrashing on Saturday. I've never really rated this Lancashire wool town's team as they've never done much. They've had the occasional good player in it but I think that they are not good enough for the PL. There are too many better teams nearby.

Coyle was talking about how he's never had such an injury crisis as a manager, so it looks likely that we'll face a depleted side on the weekend.
If we can get Modric and/or van der Vaart back, then we should really fancy winning this with a bit of style.
    Hopefully there'll be no complacency.
We still look a bit shaky on set-pieces and Bolton have cost us a lot of points down the years, but generally at their place rather than WHL.

This is our first Saturday 3pm kick off at home this season, due to the Everton game being called off.
Seems a little bit ridiculous to have to wait til December, doesn't it?

Bolton under Allardyce were the anti-Tottenham, Lidls.
All of their strengths were our weaknesses.

Nice one SF :) Yep that 2-0 v Bolton was massive, watched it on TV/Computer, big, big result.

Under Allardyce Bolton gave us massive problems, especially up there as PNP says. Kevin Davies has been a real problem for us over the years too, hopefully he's no longer the force he once was against us.

But I'd take a 1-0 to us now if offered, no danger. However, I do think we'll win and score at least 2 but the picture will be a lot clearer after the POAK game.

Nothing to do with all of the initial clubs being from the Midlands or the North of England then, Lidls?
London clubs weren't even allowed to join until Chelsea did so in 1905.

I probably shouldn't mention the match-fixing that some clubs were involved in to keep their fellow Northerners in the top-flight either, eh?

Luke, only you could pick up on cotton or wool and make an issue out of it bringing it down to Spurs. SO BLOODY WHAT?

Good link PNP, and didn't that help lead (indirectly) to us losing out to Arsenal?

    Allegedly, Ghoddle.
The whole scandal left both clubs untouched and they were the two that coincidentally backed Arsenal's promotion, amongst a lot of speculation.

Not too late to punish them all with a relegation, in my opinion!

Thanks for that Ensil,I wanted to find something like that to throw back but couldn't,not that I care. Northern English always seem to have to blow their own trumpets or find something to bring the south down a peg or two(In their eyes anyway). It's a bit like this gooner JamRag or something, always reminding us that his team were higher than us for a while. Is this inferiority complex rearing it's insecure head?
