I recall when differing ideas for the banner were discussed, the 'here and now' was more widely favoured over past toon greats and the one currently shown was a cross between the two without getting too bogged down and trying to remain quite simple.

Sure - I'm happy to try out some tweaks but the more that get's added the clumsier and busier it ends up looking unbalancing different elements.

Respect the tweaks might look busy but can you just do what YOU think best. And appreciate you doing it. There seems overwhelming support to add Gary to banner. Be a fitting tribute. Cheers

As much as I don't want it to be true, I have a weird feeling there was something else going on here.

Would be great; and not to be a twat (more of a pragmatist) but it would make more sense if it was one of the sepia/black and white background images. I do also think 'RIP Speedo' would be a bit much - I could be wrong but we don't have RIP Sir Bobby on there; whats to say which players/coaches we remember. I think an image would be enough

All respect for Speed and that, but personally I'd prefer the banner to be about the 'here and now'. The current squad.

Seems a bit silly really. He only spent 6 years here, and has no other ties to the club.

Shall we axe Sir Bobby as well then?

Robson is a different case. He's a local guy and a fan of the club. Speed was neither.

Obviously it's only a banner so it's not really that important, but it just seems like a bit of an overreaction to put him up there.

Speed's generation that were my first real team of heroes. I've always supported Newcastle, but Speed, Nobby, Shearer (basically Sir Bobby's team) were the team that were in place when I became truly aware of what it meant to support us.

I don't mean this in a condescending/arsehole way, but how old are you?

If it wasn't for John Anderson doing the radio I doubt I'd care that much about him, despite him being a past player. He was before my time and so means far less to me than others who would've sung his name in the terraces!

As you say, its only a banner, and its a simple thing to show our appreciation for a player who was an integral part of our most successful team in past 15 years!

Not just yet, seems a little premature for me.

    Let's wait and see!

Yeah, fair enough. He was at the club for 6 years. But he still did enough in that time, to become something of a club icon.

Maybe you're too young to really acknowledge the brilliance of Gary Speed and his time with Newcastle?

Or maybe I'm just smart enough and mature enough to look at the truth of things and not overreact to recent events.

Speed clearly wasn't a big enough figure to the club to deserve a place on the banner before, and the fact that he killed himself doesn't change that.

You just know that by the time it's made and I've finally got Mick to put it up, we'd have all moved to a different forum anyway....
