I don't like the tories one bit, and I don't think Sunak is up to much (he is not in any way a leader, he's the guy that does the work behind a leader), but I feel really uncomfortable with people ragging him for turning up at Saints games etc. He's a genuine supporter, and has been all his life. He should be allowed to support his team without being castigated for it. Especially by us.
Begrudging LIKE At least when he stops coming with his flotilla of black Range Rovers, I might feel a bit better about it Its not so much him, its more the company he keeps
James O’Brien just made exactly the same point. Sunak is a genuine fan, but he just isn’t very good with people. The gaffe in Wales also showed terrible ground work. He has no sense of self-deprecation, so he can’t laugh off a mistake with a witty comment, but rather he comes across as petulant, someone who has always got his way. The gulf between Sunak and the vast majority of the electorate will become more and more apparent as the campaign unfolds.
Absolutely. But I hate this focus on him supporting Saints as a problem, and the idea that he's some kind of bandwagon fan of football. If we're interested in fairness, it goes all ways.
I absolutely agree with you. The thing about him supporting Saints is completely irrelevant in the wider scheme of things, and there are a million other reasons why I won’t be voting for his party.
I agree, he has the right to support the team he wants to. Keep Saints and the image of Saints out of any campaigning though please.
https://sotn.newstatesman.com/2024/05/britainpredicts Early doors and still don't think it will go this far, but interesting and well considered nonetheless. Britain Predicts model Labour 427 Conservative 116 Liberal Democrat 63* SNP 21 Plaid 3 Green 1 *Lib Dem stands out the most to me, especially as they are predicting them to quintuple their seats despite also predicting them to lose 1.9% of the vote share. Peak First Past the Post if it comes to pass.
Yes this. In a scale of 1 to 100, with hundred being a vote for him and 1 being no way, him being a Saints fan in fairness pushed me to 0.1.
Don’t know is the easiest answer but I would hazard a guess that the government protect the public from rampant profiteering. I use bottled gas and the price rose when the Russian v Ukraine conflict started, but the government were dictating the retail cost of the bottled gas, regularly reducing the price in line with the reduction of wholesale prices. Last time I checked bottled gas here costs about 50% less than the same size bottle in the UK. With regards to utilities I think they genuinely try to look after the people first. My last two months electricity has cost around €50, total.
We are now up to 76 sitting Conservative MPs who have announced that they will not contest their seat in this election. That's more than back in the 1997 election campaign.
Those sort of numbers would make a lot of sense to me. The election result may well be similar but the mood in the country is nothing like 1997. There's a strong anti-Conservative sentiment around but there isn't pro-Labour feeling in the way there was back then. Many people will be voting tactically against the Conservatives rather than in favour of Labour. That is, if they vote at all. I suspect turnout may be way down.
I think you pretty much have it. Anti Tory, but not necessarily pro Labour. Still think it will a landslide for Sir Kier though.
