Just shed a tear again. Im distraught by this.

More so than Bobby in a way. With Bob, it was a case of expecting it to happen. But this was so unexpected :(

I know. It's unbelieveable. For me, this is bigger than the death of Jackson. I'll remember this day forever. The day an idol passed on

He was obviously greatly thought of within the football community. The reactions of Shay, Savage and Bellamy to name but a few are indicative of the high esteem Gary was held in.

My thoughts are with his family at this awful time.

Thanks for all the great memories Gary, your headers alone were worth the entrance fee. Great professional, superb footballer and a top bloke.

Just wanted to relay the feelings in South Wales today as it's obvious from this thread the respect held for Gary Speed not just by fans of NUFC but by other fans too.

Arrived and parked up at 12.30 at the Liberty. Lots of people milling around many on mobiles but a strange quietness around the place. Saw two girls, no older than 16 crying but didn't know why. We asked them what was wrong and they told us the news that had just come through. Stood there in disbelief ! Had the news confirmed by the Sky TV crews outside the ground as we just couldn't comprehend the news. Couldn't even talk for about 20 minutes let alone go in the ground, just stood outside in shock.

Inside the ground was surreal, the whole stadium was eerie, we just took our seats about 15 mins before kick off and didn't talk. Many people around the place in tears, some of the children
were inconsolable. When the teams came out, as has been said on this thread the whole stadium was silent as we listened to what was being read out by the club chaplain and the players lined up. What started as a minutes silence turned into an applause because I think we just couldn't help it and just wanted to show our respect, admiration and thanks to everything Gary Speed gave us.The Villa fans were outstanding in their support too.

I can't tell you anything about the game because today I don't care what happened. We lost a legend of the game today and the feeling in Wales is of shock and disbelief. I know you'll give the great man a good send off next week, see you in 3 weeks.

wow, must have been surreal. It's great to see the likes of Villa fans etc. showing full respect for the guy. Rivalries and such come to nothing in times like this. Thanks for sharing <ok>

I'm gutted, but am I the only one who has lost some respect for the guy?

His depression must have been unimaginable to get him to do this, but the simple fact is that he's left his wife a widow and left his two going children without a dad.

It's a tragedy, but a selfish act, and I'm beyond gutted for his family more than anything.

Exactly , everyone liked him and respected him , looked like a happy family , was doing really well with Wales and looked like a happy person on football focus yesterday talking about the future etc.

    Just can't believe it.

I struggle to see how it was anything else. Police said it wasn't suspicious circumstances.

Also, I see where your coming from Chappaz, but we aren't to know what was going on inside his head, and it must've been pretty bad to make him take his own life.

I wonder who found him, must be one of the worst experiences anyone could ever have.

depression is a terrible thing people think it goes hand in hand with people whose life isn't perfect or who struggle but this isn't true.To be so desperate to take your own life shows the depths this illness can take a person and yes suicide is one of the most selfish acts a person can do but depression doesn't make you think/behave rationally
A terribly sad end to a great mans life

Like Secret has said. Depression makes someone act unrationally, and not think straight. So, we cant really sit on the high horse and say, "oh he shouldnt have done it etc" because, most of us probably havent been in such a position. So itd be impossible to say that we wouldnt have done the same thing.

We don't know any of the personal background that may never be aired in public by his family etc
and that is as it should be unless of course they want to say more in a bid to explain why.

    A suggestion I've read today kind of makes sense if you cannot believe depression is the cause;
many top athletes such as footballers, boxers etc who have constant hard blows to the head can
develop motor neurone disease which is a tragically debilitating breaking down of thre mind whilst
the body is still fit. Who knows, maybe he just received word from his doctor and couldn't bear
to become a burden and decided to end his life before he made his wife and children watch him
suffer and start to waste away?

All just pointless speculation but not worth feeling ill of his memory...

I don't know what to say - had my Dad and Husband with me today when we found out and we all just stood in shock for a good ten minutes. RIP Gary I hope whatever demons were plaguing you are now gone and I hope beyond all measure that your wife and family are left in peace as they try to comes to terms and accept this horrific event over the next few months and years.

Not lost respect, i think its fair for people to be a little angry though, he must have been going thru hell all alone but hes made a silly choice that has impacted most on his loved ones. its a little selfish but you cant blame him if he was troubled, depression puts the worst into your head and you do not think straight...
