It's been interesting researching this 1925-26 season. I had assumed that it would simply be months on end of dire results and awful match reports. But until mid-January 1926 it was not a poor campaign really. Charlton got to the FA Cup 3rd round, and were only narrowly knocked out by the Champions of England - who went on to win the 1st Division again to preserve that title by May. And twice in this season we saw crowds at the Valley of around 20,000. Those were probably real attendance figures too, even under-estimates. Not the silly ones that are published today. Granted the 1925-26 season ended very badly. But over the whole campaign it looks as though Charlton Athletic 98 years ago were more competitive than we were in season 2023-24.
