If you love the club as much as Shay claimed to when his place was threatened, you don't run off when it needs you the most. Doesn't matter what the other circumstances are.

Lets not argue over something that happened 3 years ago. Not tonight.

Talking about football, especially arguing about it, just doesnt feel right tonight.

Not single handedly, though I'm sure he believes that.

Regardless, what's a few more months? He still would've been wanted in the summer. There was no reason for him to leave in January except for greed.

  5. Who the **** is this kid?

Shay Given was fantastic for 11 years for us and owed us nothing, he was very likely pushed by his agent and Ashley to leave, and I'm pretty sure he would have seen that we had to excellent keepers in Harper and Krul to take over.

Owen was ****, and owed us a lot considering how much ****ing money we spent on the ****, but he ****ed off to be a bench warmer for Man Utd.

Duff also didn't deserve his wages. Lazy Irish twat who was extremely average for us, 3 goals and 2 assists all season for a bloke on his wages is pathetic.

The difference is, Shay wasn't one of the reasons we went down at all, he was brilliant, Owen and Duff were 2 of the players that contributed to our downfall by being lazy and ****ing **** for people on ridiculous wages, but they ****ed off at the first opportunity.

I've always had respect for Shay, he was a loyal servant to the club and he had every right to leave when he did. I remember just before he left we got beat 5-1 by Liverpool and he was named man of the match, he conceded 5 goals and was still the man of the match! It says it all really and you can't blame him for being fed up with that. Man City were an ambitious and wealthy club and we were a joke that was destined for relegation. You'd have to be pretty daft to turn down Man City for Newcastle under those circumstances. After all he had to think about his own career. Even the seasons leading up to our relegation we were awful, we were getting worse by the season and Shay obviously decided enough was enough and I fully understand that. Given was one o the very few players I'd consider to be a legend at Newcastle and I for one will always give him a warm welcome when he returns to St James. He's a great goalkeeper and a great guy.

Owen and Duff were **** that season (and Duff for his whole Newcastle career), but they still stuck with the club that season and tried to prevent relegation. If they'd wanted out they could have got out.
Compare that to the "club legend" that is Shay Given. He ditched us mid-season so he could get more money. There's nothing more to it.

The only reason you're getting so mad about it is because you know I'm right.

Nobody should have to go through the horror of playing behind a back four of:

    Carr----Bramble----Boumsong----Babayaro

I'm surprised he stayed as long as he did to be honest, i hold no grudge whatsoever (still wish he'd been a little bit ****e against Cabaye though)

That was the only 5-1 draw I've ever seen where the keeper got MOTM.
Given - true professional, NUFC legend. Will not hold going to City against him. Shame that Hart popped up when he did.
So brave to go out and play today.

If you think Owen, Duff etc tried to save us from relegation then you're very mistaken. They were physically present, not much more.

Still more than Super Shay's contribution though, isn't it?

Oh for godsake, you're not right. You are wrong. Owen didnt give a ****, nor did Duff. Given, did care. As much as you say he didnt. He did.

He left, as he was offered a good deal. Which I think most of us on here would have taken.

Tash is right. You are wrong imo.

    Now stop arguing ffs

shay could of left us years earlier for a much better side but he stuck with us you cant blame the lad for thinking about his career, if you want to blame someone for getting us relegated that season its ashley and his ridiculous decisions a team can't be expected to adapt to a new manager every couple of months.

Respect was the wrong word to use in my article. I didn't lose respect, I was extremely disappointed. I remember that Liverpool game at home like it was yesterday. Shay's face after every save, the amount of shots he had to face. It easily could have been 10-1 if it wasn't for Shay. Maybe if he went to Arsenal I would of actually been happy for him.

Never lost respect for Given when he left us, despite many seeming to. He had been brilliant for us for a very long time and deserved better, especially the way the club was being ran. We owed him a hell of a lot and he owed us nothing.

Never lost an ounce of respect for Given. He stuck with us for much longer than he could of and who can really blame him for finally having enough after the crapfest which was the match against Liverpool and the joke of Joe Kinnear. He obviously always and still does love the club and played his heart out every single time.
