It’s an interesting way to look at it. I guess what I mean by punching up is more about recognising that – for example – I am a white, straight, male and that makes me part of a group that has, historically, had it pretty good. I don’t believe – at all – that I’m better than anyone, but, historically, the group I am part of has been treated, by others, better than most, for a long long time. I am the product and beneficiary, whether I like it or not, of the privilege of all white, straight males that have come before me. Punching up is about recognising that you shouldn’t mock people who have not been treated as kindly through time as the group you are a part of.
Yep, rumour has it it's to be Stan Ternant. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Remember an interview with Stan Ternant who scouted for us during Steve Bruce tenure. He was adamant that if Bruce had been left alone by Ehab he would have made City a mid table prem team. Obviously we will never know.
Funny how the only race specific version of guilt is white guilt. Almost as if white people have done lots of terrible things they should probably regret.
Let’s not use semantics to get some people off the hook. Punching-down means targeting people in a less privileged position than yourself. Understanding your privilege and another groups hardship is very different from thinking you’re better than those people. By your logic, which I disagree with, I could look at your post and pick you up for using sub-group as the prefix sub, by definition, places something as lesser or smaller then something else. Of course, I wouldn’t, because the logic is idiotic, as is your justification for not liking the term punching-down.
Pretty much every race has done terrible things over the course of history, some still do to this day..... Why just single out whites?
I feel guilty for what columbus did I feel disgust everytime i look at my hands And i feel like im personally responsibile Even though i wasnt born I still do
That’s like comparing Manchester United with Wrexham in terms of footballing success. Completely different levels. Also, because it sends the racist posters on here into meltdown. Which is fun.
I’ve not used it as an argument against him as evidence that he thinks he’s better than others because that would be silly (and I don’t think he does) so no, I haven’t
I think I'm broadly on the same side as you in this debate, but as someone from Hull who's origins at least are working class I would say that HIGNFY demonstrates almost perfectly how hard it is to get right. It's a while ago now, and I honestly don't intend this to be a political point per se (and I'm no fan of the bloke either), but seeing privileged public school educated Ian Hislop ripping the piss out of working class lad made good John Prescott week in week out didn't feel particularly like punching up, but far more like trying to put the upstart oik back in his box.
Yer TBF you're right, some races have done way worse things then whites. But this isn't a competition. Absolutely every races in the history of mankind ( sorry humankind) have done awful things, for some reason it's just embedded into humans
