tigers1970 used the term Springbankistan in a deliberately derogatory manner, he meant it as insult, as he’s a bit thick and a bit racist.
Stan is a term that in itself means "the land" and comes from Persian roots. Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan all date back to prior soviet rule. These countries are all from persian descent and typically are heavily muslim. Considering I did a lot of my studies about the soviet rule I would probably try another one chief. But you know, minor details
Typically, racism is built on generations and generations of oppression at the hands of a group of people that believe themselves superior to everyone else. Considering the English (and many other white countries and/or empires) were usually the ones that believed they were better, and then went about benefiting from the subjugation of others (usually indigenous people of colour), then no, it’s not the same.
Getting wound up about things on behalf of people who likely couldn't care less. And of course the posters have never ever said anything about Irish, Scousers, Scots, French, Gypsies, vegans, etc etc. No, of course not. Get a life.
I dont get wound up by the act itself. I get wound up when people deny being racist when they quite clearly are Also I, like many, would point out discrimination wherever it may be. However, the only race you mentioned there is Gypsies just an fyi
None of the stans you name are in the middle east which was the point I raised. The only Stan which could be included would be Afghanistan.
Fair enough regarding the middle east part. It still doesn't take away the fact that using the term -istan in the way it was originally used was racist.
Ottoman empire, Russian empire, China, Romans, Greeks , Spaniards, Dutch, ....Give over. Brits have interfered more than they should , and often made things worse (which continues to this day) but Brits have also brought a lot of good. Why the hell this sack cloth mentality? It's ridiculous
