What a fascinating reply. 'm only commenting because there was this earlier discussion about where Greaves would be best going. Someone suggested Spurs where he'd have a good chance. I was watching the Spurs gave t(as I often do) and was thinking he's nowhere near (and that's compared to players around his age too) Big apologies for thinking I could post a thought on here about one of our players that might be moving on this summer.
Of course he'd need a period of settling in. Bowen took half a season to get up to speed and now he's West Ham's best player. Commenting on players playing for Spurs yesterday and saying Greaves wouldn't start over them tomorrow is just a bit daft. He'd be starting over Romero within 6-12 months of being at Spurs.
I don’t think he would. It’s really unorthodox to play two left-footed centre-halves in a back four and usually only ever happens during injury crises. He’d be competing with van de Ven at Spurs. Drăgușin is Romero’s back-up.
Perhaps. What I would say then if he's competing purely with van de Ven is that VdV has had a lot of soft tissue injuries, and even recently against Newcastle looked horrific, so he's not a lock just because he scored a goal out of nowhere and can run really fast.
Oh, I agree. I would even say Greaves would get more appearances for Spurs next season if he signed there than he would at Aston Villa, as an example. Villa have had three decent left-footed centre-backs in Mings, Torres and Lenglet this, though Mings has been injured all season with an ACL injury and Lenglet is only on loan. But he’d still be competing with Torres and Mings next season if he went there. Greaves could be Branthwaite’s replacement at Everton but Greaves would be wasted under Dyche. Not a dig at Dyche but that style of football doesn’t get the best out of a centre-back like Greaves. West Ham under Lopetegui would also suit him I think, or Wolves and Brentford.
I’d be disappointed if we got less than £20 million for Greaves, not including add-ons. Webster went from Bristol City to Brighton for £20 million in 2019. I would argue Greaves is better now than what Webster was in 2019 and adjusted for inflation, that £20 million then is about £24.5 million now.
I personally feel really sorry for Connolly. His goals per minute ratio in the first half of the season was great, and I remember seeing the footage from behind the goal of that goal he scored at home to Blackburn. The timing of his run and the way he just passed the ball into the net made it one of my favourite goals of the season. I know he's reported to have had issues before the Norwich game but I wonder if that challenge from Gunn had a mental effect on him as well as a physical one. It was a disgrace and effectively finished Aaron's career at a club where he seemed really happy.
Aaron is the reason Aaron's career at Hull is over, nobody else at all. He's only himself to blame. He has quite obvious talent, but he needs to sort himself out or he's going to waste it
The kid just enjoys the lifestyle of being a footballer too much rather than pushing himself to have the best career he can have. Marcus Maddison Mk II.
How does he spend his time out injured though? Was it by staying in peak physical condition or by getting pissed, getting into fights, having a poor diet etc.? Delap was out for three months and came back into the side and he looked physically fit and ready to go again. Connolly arrived last summer from Brighton overweight. You could see his love handles in his tight Kappa shirt. Yeah he might have scored a few goals before his concussion injury against Norwich but he doesn’t have the desire or professionalism to be consistently fit and in good shape.
