In the Humberside interview he talks very clearly that he believes player recruitment shouldn’t involve the manager and that it’s up to the scouting team and himself to identify the players they want in the team. He said he might run names by the manager before signing, but not necessarily. There’s a lot to unpack from that section, but it was pretty clear he’s not keen on structuring a team around what a manager wants.
Yep, I remember while people were frustrated with Grant for not changing the shape there were equal measures of frustration directed at Ehab who was perceived to be demanding that shape.
An owner should have zero say in player recruitment unless that owner has appropriate experience and qualifications.
Can’t think of a time I’ve walked away from the stadium feeling fantastic because we played great attacking football and lost compared with … yeah wasn’t the best game but we took 3 points. I know what I prefer
It's absolutely terrifying. On another note, I hated that comment that said he knows better than the fans. There's a lot of fans who'll consume a lot of different football, and will be very knowledgeable. We've got a few on here, Kalman watches so many random games and comes up with players, I'm certain a few would be really good signings for us. ST does as well. You could definitely utilise a select number of fans as an initial scouting procedure.
This thread is going to be a hard catch up in the morning, I hope it doesn't run to 15 pages again. Nite nite
If Acun picks the team, and wants attacking football, best to play with out and out forwards next season, unlike this one where we've started matches with none. Abridged version, Acun picking the starting eleven is garbage. That is all.
I had my concerns when he was personally negotiating for Seri and Twine but they were reasonable signings, but he seems to want to use city as a real life football manager rather than putting people with the appropriate qualifications in roles. Seemed to be improving when Rosenior was appointed but..
Who said he picks the starting eleven? And if Acun wants some out and out forwards perhaps he should finally spend a bit of money on a few.
Think people need to realise Acun isn’t just your bog standard owner, he’s been involved in the football industry for over 32 years, literally started as a football reporter and is also involved at Fenerbahce too. Why is him suggesting players terrifying or worrying but a scout that started in the football industry because their dad worked at a club (City’s current lead scout) better? He has lots of football connections around the world, I’m sure him and his team get all sorts of tips and info about players. How anyone can complain after we’re getting players like Omur, Seri, Philogene because of Acun…come on
Sad for Liam as he was clearly a good bloke. Connections with City aside, I don’t think it’s a big surprise. Underperformed since Christmas and although we had an identity, it’s hard to point to progress being due to him when it’s undeniably coincided with us getting better players. Too safe and passive in moments we needed to grab and turn in our favour. Mixed feelings on a few aspects, mainly how many of the transfers were his and how realistic it is for a young manager to hit the ground running with an overhauled squad in the second half of the season, but given the amount of times he’d push his own hype about style of play making us such an attractive destination for players, it’s hard to feel too sorry for him. I’d be interested to know, as I know a few with far more inside information than myself have alluded to, what the players thought of him and if he was actually that popular. Distinct lack of heartfelt goodbyes from players which may be in indication.
Becuase he's made a lot of naive footballing decisions that have proven he doesn't know the Championship very well, which someone with experience and knowledge of the league would've been able to avoid.
I'm going to sleep now, too many red wines with the work night out. But we turned Giles into a **** attacking left back! Sorry for the Wum....Good night.
If Acun wants to be purely head scout I have no issues with that, it's the combining of multiple roles that lead to conflicts of interest which are the issue. If the head scout is also able to fire the manager for playing a particular way that's wrong to me. A properly functioning organisation has a separation of powers.
If anything the last 18 months under LR has proven Acun does not pick the team. Cant imagine why anyone would think otherwise. Just look at the Allsop situation or the strikerless selection... or Tufan giving multiple MOTM performances only to be benched the next game, or Slater at right back.. or Pandur not getting a single minute of game time since joining, or Sinik being shipped out... could go on. It's clear to me Liam has had full control over team selection.
Well that’s not what you said, you said an owner should have zero say in recruiting even though said owner has bought us players like Seri, Omur, Philogene, Tufan…
Oh come on…he’s made the same mistakes every club makes, are we the only club to buy players that haven’t turned out as good as we thought? Or sacked managers? What mistake has he made that no other club as made? Even the biggest best run clubs in the world do that
