Hmm. There is a slight caveat to the analogy where it doesn't quite work. A lot of people won't like this but any head coach is only as good as the players available to him. And his job in their hands. If he feels they aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing he has to use the tools available to him to get them to perform how he wants. One of those tools is calling them out publicly. Plus, he's bound to feel frustration. If Peter Reid had called players out in public, no one would have minded. The fans have only got upset about it because they don't like Dodds and didn't like Beale (although, back when Peter Reid was manager, people weren't such fannies about this kind of thing).
Fill your boots mate. I haven't been wrong about much on the way the club was going following Mowbray being sacked unfortunately. Feel free to point out how blindly backing Speakman over his woeful running of this club from the last 2 transfer windows to now would have been a positive? His mates in the dugout from the prancing warm up half time subs routine bloke to the pretend head coaches are an absolute bad joke and bring the clubs standards to the gutter imo. Not a person involved who has been anywhere near a high level professional footballer/operator.
Beale and Dodds aren't liked because they were always going to take the club backwards and then did so very quickly. Simple as that.
They weren't great appointments but the attitude towards makes a massive contribution to it all becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Another few tools would be to play players in their right positions, drop players who aren’t performing and get the best out of what you have at your disposal. I’ve had to sit through 90 minutes of school boy football watching players just follow the ball with what would appear to be no direction or coaching whatsoever. That my friend is nothing to do with liking Dodds or me being a Fanny.
I don't dislike Dodds at all and I didn't dislike Beale either, to be fair. Both seem like perfectly decent blokes and I'm sure both have forgotten more about the inner workings of football than I will ever know. Neither of them strike me as leaders though and they should be judged on their performance, which is more than just knowing your stuff. One of the factors involved, which you seem to discount, and, to use your example, was key to Reid's success, is getting the whole club (including the fanbase) behind you. That certainly gives you a remit to slate the players publicly, and in some cases will actually get you credit. Not the case for Dodds. I was personally shocked with his press conference yesterday, completely out of order, in my book. If there was any possibility he stays in any capacity, i dont think he says what he said. I think it was done in petulance because he knows he won't have to answer for it, because he's on his way out.
Hopefully get some announcements over the rest of the weekend and the new gaffer can get straight to work.
With the possible exception of Aouchiche, no one was played out of position today. Who is at fault for the school boy football though? Does Dodds control every movement each player makes on the pitch? The players have to take some responsibility for their performance. Its not all on the coach, whether that's Dodds or someone else. The fannies comment was specifically about people being upset because coach has criticised the players publicly.
I think your last paragraph is spot on. Completely agree. I think the getting the fanbase onside is different though. Neither Dodds or Beale were popular or wanted before they began. Whether people were behind them or not was decided before they began. They never had the chance to unite anything.
Could they not unife the players. As head coaches should do? And perform? And get results? They failed at them all. And the fans said so. I looked a the touchline today and I was embarrassed at the difference. Significant.
He played Dack out of position last home game, and has played numerous players in the past, he brought Rigg on the wing, until Ba came on. Dodds is responsible for coaching and for tactics, it looked like no one knew what they were supposed to be doing. I’m not suggesting the players aren’t responsible, but he has to take responsibility overall for the complete ****show, since he has managed to somehow make us look worse than we were under Beale. I don’t mind calling out players, but when you admit that you gave Millwall more possession cos they usually lose when they do, then to follow it up with, if a prospective employer looks at the win ratio of any potential candidates, then he isn’t interested, it sets my alarm bells ringing. He is in self preservation mode, because whilst people will know he won’t make a head coach, his credentials as a coach are now questionable. I for one hope he is gone and I never have to hear his bullshit again
If you read my posts I think it is clear that I do not blame Dodds for being put in the position that he has. The question should be addressed to the person who put him in that position.
