New checks on EU food imports from today. Delays at ports, higher prices and less choice.

    Freedom!

    Bit selective Strolls......

Only relates to animal and plant products that present a medium to high risk to biosecurity and health.....

Mind it's a shame these controls don't relate to illegal migration from Europe...... we've got huge issues here and not all of it coming vía UK..... Our own town relies on tourism, we have 4 decent side hotels and 3 of them are housing refugees from ukraine and africa..... there was a tent on the beach last week with a family living in it..... we just don't have the available accommodation to take the number entering the country...... our government hasn't covered itself in glory with it's handling of the problems, heads up own ar5es would be a polite way of putting it......

Strolls selective about the Glorious EU? Surely not :emoticon-0100-smile

Really sympathetic with the good people of Ireland who have been royally stuffed by their own government. Here, the UK government prepares for Rwanda, but has "lost" half those on deportation list.

The long term solution must be at EU level. The UK should be able to turn back the boats on the Channel. If that happened, the illegals would have no reason to loiter on the north coast of France. At the same time, the UK and Ireland could have overseas assessment centres to sort true asylum seekers from economic migrants

Don’t want to get into an argument over this but Ireland has every right to respond appropriately to the UK when it has basically dumped an agreement both countries had in place since 2020 about the ‘right to return’.

Sunak has publicly on two occasions poked fun by saying it’s now our problem and broken our long standing agreement (underpinned by treaty)

to say it’s not gone down well over here is an understatement!!!
Our Govt has now quickly enacted its own policy from today which will send them back regardless of what the UK wants.
    Relations are not good.

That's what I've said all along. There should be one in Calais. This government wouldn't be willing to pay for them, though. That's why we still have such high numbers of unprocessed claims.

I've seen no reference in the British press to a legally binding returns agreement in 2020, Nuts. Do you have details?

Not in Calais, because those that fail will take to the dinghies. Maybe N.Italy.

Goldie, I heard this mentioned on the radio last evening...... It appears that there has been an agreement between ROI & UK since 2020 which allowed people to be returned, it was a post Brexit agreement underpinned by the Common Travel Area.
Sunak seems to have ignored this insisting this only applies if the EU agrees to UK returning migrants to France.....

It's strange that it's got little traction here, Trammers. I've now seen such an agreement described by Sky as "operational" but I suspect it's not legally enforceable. In refusing to take returns, Sunak wants to put pressure on the EU and France, so the UK can return illegals to France, which would help solve the Irish problem

    Trammers, Goldie

you got there before me. I suppose our side has responded negatively to Sunak’s comments and also those of JRM who has been goading us over recent weeks. The response by our TDs (MP equivalent) has been rushed and bullish and no doubt has handed the Tories a gift ahead of local elections over there.

There was no discussions or bilateral agreement on this, that’s what was annoying

How about it moved from the political union led by France that Macron wants, and reverts to the common market many of us voted for?

Rees-Mogg, when asked a while back why the UK hadn't yet implemented the border checks that were an inevitable consequence of leaving the Single Market and 'taking back control', said 'Because to do so would be an act of self harm'.

Indeed Jacob, it is, isn't it?
