I kind of agree and disagree. Mowbray wasn't that popular a choice at the time but became popular. Mainly due to the results and the good football. That should have been an indicator that unpopular appointments can turn out to be good. But despite this recent example, Beale wasn't given time. He's a good coach and, with time and patience, we may well have seen an improvement. Fans were on his back straight away though, mainly because he wasn't someone else.
Being completely honest, I didn't particularly like Beale as a character, and I don't like Speakman. I'll defend them to the hilt though because I don't like the treatment they get and a lot of the animosity towards them ignores the fact that they are/were capable people, trying to bring success to our club.
He was also given a bad press up in Scotland, so both sets of fans are wrong ?. Beale was a disaster, part and parcel of the job is public perception and with the performances matching results he just had to go.
I didn't warm to Beale but was prepared to give him a chance. I didn't like the ranger's fans who slagged him off for his previous performance and weren't prepared to give him a chance.
That's the problem. Fans want a name, or something a bit funky whereas what the club needs is the right man. Not one of us were jumping up and down at Alex Neil or Tony Mowbray, but most of us got our panties wet at the thought of Roy Keane coming back. I'm glad (if reports are to be believed) that KLD is leading this appointment because KS absolutely ****ed us last time by appointing his mate
I would have taken is 70% win record down here like... ...but I take your point. He was on a hiding to nothing here. He's not a big enough personality to handle the weight of expectation at this club. The way he dismissed the fans as outside noise, or starting digging out players when we lost smacked of a man out of his depth. That appointment (and the blame for the failure of it) is ALL on Speakman IMHO.
I agree he had to go. His position had become completely untenable. A lack of success at one club does not necessarily indicate that a manager will be a failure at another club. There are countless high profile examples of that which have been gone over on this board plenty of times. I don't put much stock in football fans' opinions to be honest. Some of the reactions to what Beale said in the press we're truly, cringingly, pathetic. Characteristic of modern society's desire to be offended by things that aren't offensive.
Agree. This is the point I'm trying to make, albeit clumsily.........and I'm not a particular fan of Beale, but,if he had been given the time, does anyone think we would have finished in a worse position than we are now?
TM had to go. The performances were getting worse and worse. Beginning of the season Sky were all over us, and we were live on Sky at least once or twice a month because of how we played last year. As our performances tailed off, Sky dumped us, as we weren't entertaining. That'll be a lot of lost revenue. Since TM has left there are two common denominators in our worsening performances, Dodds and Proctor. I didn't want Beale appointed, and felt we deserved better, but I was more than happy to give him a chance. Unfortunately for Beale he wasn't able to bring in his own team, so the chance of a new manager bounce, with new ideas from a new Number 2 were diminished. Instead he had to put up with MD and MP. Since Beale has gone it's again the same 2 coaches. No new ideas, so I really hope KLD has learnt a lesson to allow the new person to bring there own team, and get rid of the 2 current clowns.
Perhaps not, but I think we'd have far more unhappy players and the support would be absolutely poisonous by now. I like a man who learns from his mistakes, but he seemed to think that involved doing everything he did to get himself the sack at Rangers, only much faster.
If,as we have been led to believe,Beale is a good coach, and we would have finished in no worse than we are now,why do you think that?
I think it's an interesting conversation. I think we would've been in a better league position yes, however, finishing 7th-10th would've meant going into next season with him in charge and I don't think that would've been a good thing. In a way, I think this bad run will have a good impact on the club as KLD will, hopefully, make the essential changes needed to push for the 1st-6th spots. 1 step back, 3 steps forward hopefully.
I certainly think what's happened this season will prove to be an important step in our development. A sort of watershed that has required KLD to have some degree of reassessment. It's probably true to say that if appointing Beale had been successful, we might not have reached that point. I don't think the sacking of Beale, in itself, should be seen as any kind of positive though.
Because Dodds at least seems to know how to keep his trap shut. Sunderland supporters will by and large support a manager going through a poor period if that manager at least appears suitably chastened about the tough time he's going through. If, however, a manager is deflecting the blame all over the place then he'll get very short shrift. The 'just noise' comment and the handshake finished him. And both were entirely avoidable. That's on him.
Disagree. I think getting upset about the "outside noise" comment is the behaviour of entitled people who are unwilling to consider that their own actions (in being so unreasonably negative towards him) should be questioned. I think getting upset about, or sacking someone over, the disputed handshake incident makes us look pathetic as a fanbase and the club hierarchy weak.
It all stems from his behaviour, ultimately. Here and at other clubs. He did exactly what Rangers supporters said he would do. There's no escaping that. Change the behaviour, change the outcome.
