Bristol City and Joe Williams: The case for and against and why it's far from straightforward Bristol City midfielder Joe Williams has been a key player for the Robins this term, showing clear improvements under Liam Manning but his contract situation poses a number of questions for the club https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-city-joe-williams-case-9242591 ' The Scouser repeatedly argued with various Norwich City players as an elaborate defensive wall was being formed, was so joyous to watch. Williams could hardly contain his smirk.' 'But Williams’ performance on Saturday went far beyond raising the blood pressure of Barnes or any other Norwich player. On and off the ball, the Scouser was magnificent; his use of possession, when delivering simple passes or attempting elaborate switches when the situation arose.'
I believe the guy is worth a contract offer, we have always liked a bit of aggression and mild smirking in our midfield, I won't mention our ultimate hero..
Agree, at last, he seems to have put his injuries behind him to the point he’s producing the kind of performances we hoped for when we bought him. Plus he’s one of our more experienced players, and as you rightly pointed out has a bit of “edge” to him.
We need Williams. If we lost him, he’d cost loads to replace, as RP said, but not only that; the ‘replacement’ would need time to gel into the team. It would take time and we want to hit the ground running next season if we want any chance of making the top 6.
To be fair to RR it’s only recently he’s been fully fit and showing the sort of form that you’d want to keep him, before there was always a question whether he’d ever fully get over his injuries. I like him and Knight playing together a bit deeper, with a more advanced AMF in front of them.
He's been relatively fit for the last couple of seasons.. I'm not sure why we now question his fitness more than anyone else.. Players do get injuries and it's more to do with what they're like when they return......IMO he's been fine
He seems to be confident in his own fitness now, not holding back. His injuries were not just run of the mill but career threatening. It’s noticeable these last few months that he’s growing in confidence they won’t return. Like a lot things at championship level, much of it is mental resilience, which thankfully he now seems to have.
I don't think he ever held back tbf...I think it was the fans and commentators whom were worried...he just played his game
Solid player at this level, always has been even playing for Wigan when they were at this level only to be ****ed over by a dodgy chairman who ****ed off 4 weeks after buying the club and the FA, only relegated because of the 12 point deduction.
Joe Williams finds control amid the chaos to become a better player for Bristol City Bristol City head coach Liam Manning outlines the clear improvements Joe Williams has made since he arrived at Ashton Gate https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/joe-williams-finds-control-amid-9246614
Being managed better since LM has been here.. I think all the players are being disciplined to the specific job given.. Definitely more structure to our game.
James has been a fantastic signing and would like to see him sign again, salary permitting. I think Joe Williams is an even more important signing for next season. He's our only ball winning midfielder and without the ball..............and will provide a solid base with Knight and Bird allowing Twine to play further forward thus feeding Tommy and our new CF. Simples.
Brian Tinnion delivers update on Joe Williams' future as Bristol City contract nears end Bristol City are keen to retain the services of the former Everton academy graduate https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/joe-williams-bristol-city-contract-9253628
I agree we need to keep James, but as you say, it’s salary dependent. We know he’s on the highest contract ever given to a City player, so theoretically, if we could afford him over the last 2 years, we should be able to afford him now we’re past those times. Unless his salary = 2 other players that could come in, I suspect that has been our issue during his time with us so far, affording him means we had to sacrifice elsewhere.
You think Williams will cost what about James we need to keep him the glue that keeps the team playing-Saturday everything went through him-need to reduce his wages but hopefully they can sort a deal. Would cost a fortune to replace what he brings.
