I’ll remind you of this when you’re fuming at us losing a game (not that we will, because Lemon Laces, but still…)!
I was going to reply to this last week but wanted to wait, and lo and behold Cardiff was another game we absolutely should have won. The point remains that we have had many more silly results compared to those around us. Yes sport is complex, but I think we’ve underperformed. If we don’t go up, ~50% of our starting lineup will be gone, some of whom I won’t be disappointed to lose. Martin needs to learn a lot of lessons though, namely playing an actual DM when Downes isn’t fit. Maybe we’ll be better placed for autos next season with some good signings and Ross Stewart actually on the pitch?
Don’t know where we go from here. I like him as a bloke. But his style won’t get us promoted. Too pedestrian, doesn’t play to our players strengths, doesn’t adapt, doesn’t learn. Too stubborn. Trying to play this style with this level of player is suicide. Not sure where we go from here really.
Said this in the middle of our unbeaten run, still the same now, but much more on the side of “the players are why we win games”
If he gets us promoted he can stay, if he fails he goes. I don’t think his style will work for us in the PL, but if he gets us up he’s done his job and should be given a chance.
Think I’d be keen to get someone else in for the playoffs if I was the owners. Martin cannot win big games
It does feel that Russell's system relies too much on one player, when Downes doesn't play we are just not the same team. We'll have to pray that he is fit for the play-offs.
Russell Martin is just a nicer Nathan Jones. Won't change his system despite the glaring issues that are bloody obvious to everyone else. He's got to go.
I’m ****ing sick of supporting a team that loses every important game. All very well beating the dross in - let’s face it - an awful league. But every time we come up against anyone remotely good we get absolutely battered.
Until recently I'd been thinking Martin's played a similar role to Pardew in that he's turned a team used to losing every week into a team that wins a lot. But I don't think he's improved the team's mentality enough and our defence still isn't good enough for the top of the Championship, never mind the Premier League. Oh, and our two best defenders will likely be off in the summmer. Shame really, he seems a nice enough bloke.
Unfortunately/fortunately there's no room for sentiment in football. If there was Nigel Adkins would still be out manager.
Again a manager whose career was a defender…….but has a team that can’t defend. Still out for me please, but for whom ?
