Other clubs have had success in it. Clubs have taken more to the Associate Members Cups finals than we did for our appearances. It can kick start more support for those clubs.
I mean, if we drew a big team at home would that be any different? I'm still a bit confused at the implicit connection to the replay in this scenario. Is it because it feels more 'earned' than if we'd just been drawn at home?
Remember the second replay between Leeds and Sunderland at Boothferry Park? I know a few there who one day dreamed we would get the type of support in BP that had Sunderland that night. And still do. The first replay is Leeds record attendance (and still, as far as I know the only time they have beaten City’s record attendance. The previous record at Elland Road was for a game between Leeds RL and Hunslet which was 54,000, twice as many for that derby as the biggest derby in the universe and everywhere else has ever had).
No. It shows they get more tickets and can sell them. If we had got there in our dark days we could have taken 40,000 there like some clubs did, which is more tickets than you get for a Cup Final or play off final. Some of those would have returned. Same as if you want to see your team in a Wembley Final you have more chance in an EFL Final than an FA Cup one. Though we only took 1,500 to a semi-final at Old Trafford when Boro took 10,500 there the year before , you cam bet we would have sold out for Wembley.
Because your completley missing the point of the importance and the romance of the FA Cup. The Chelsea game in 1966 was a tie between a top First Division, and very fashionable club v little Hull City from Division 3, and we came from two nil down to force a draw. It was national news headlines on the day. Chris Simpkin has dined off his goal in the replay to this day.
Syd always misses the point. Uses a lot of words but says little. Another couple of things we would have missed were two replays against Blyth Spartans and signing Les Mutrie on the strength of them or Duane Darby writing himself into City folklore with his 6 goals against Whitby after possibly the most embarrassing performance I have seen from City in the first leg at Scarborough.
Don't forget blyth brought loads more to boothferry park than we took to their place. Big games for them.
The replays had already been scrapped in the later rounds to accommodate the bigger clubs and in the earlier rounds Premier League club play their reserves anyway, there was no reasonable justification for this change. They're pushing their luck as well, parliament debates the Football Governance Bill next week.
Back in 1978 I went to see the 5th round replay between Blyth Spartans and Wrexham at St James's Park. The official attendance was just over 42,000 (with an estimated 10,000 locked out) but I bet there was closer to 50,000 given how packed the terraces were. 2 of the Blyth team that night went on to play for Newcastle. It's nights like those - and the ones that have been mentioned further up the thread - that make replays special.
spain and italy already have their super cups over there but to be honest, maybe its age, but i honestly dont care about the top flight and that stuff anymore, its nice to watch the top top level players now and again but in terms of games, i love the championship and bundesliga (since many of the games are free on youtube)
Agreed, I much prefer watching us in the championship, but I also want us to be the best we possibly can be and challenge. I would love to see us in the prem and what acun could do with us though..... But I really hate the prem, VAR etc
Their Super Cups are the equivalent of our Community Shield, the Copa del Ray and Coppa Italian are still played in Spain and Italy respectively.
