I remember a time when we were absolute masters at this back in Sgt Wilko's day. Corner floated to the near post, flick on to the back post, Chapman bangs it in.
One of those looks a little ambitious. Assuming it was taken from the cheese wedge and he was aiming for the tunnel to waste time
The difference to today though were the pinpoint deliveries from the likes of Strachan, Speed and McAllister. Equally, the pinpoint deliveries from the likes of Lorimer, Giles and Gray.
Funnily enough whilst we scored a lot of goals from dead ball situations during our title winning season in 1991/92, we only scored 14 goals as a result of corners, so 4 more than last season. Given that in the title winning season we scored 74 goals, and last season we scored 48 goals, our goals from corner percentage for those 2 seasons was 18% in 91/92 and 20% in 2022/23. No idea how many corners we had in total for each season, stats don't exist for 91/92 and there is no way I'm watching 42 90 minute games just to count all the corners we had I was expecting the number to be higher just from what I remember. Guess we scored so many from free kicks and throw ins that they all merge together as being goals from set pieces
Okay, I was hoping it would show that we weren’t as crap with corners as we think we are and other teams struggle to score from them. Clearly I was wrong we’re ****
Just found this on the Athletic. 14 other team were even more crap than us last season . This season is a different story Last season in the EPL an average of 3.94 goals were scored from every 100 corners. This season we have so far had 259 corners, so we should have scored at least 10 goals, to maintain that average, or 13 goals if we were to maintain last seasons performance of scoring 5 goals every 100 corners. Just using those figures to base our performance regarding corners this season, then we rank just above Scum, as we have scored a total of 6 goals from corners this season, which gives us a ranking of 2.3 goals for every 100 corners we have. So this season is pretty crap A total of 1084 goals were scored in the EPL last season, of which 151 were scored from corners, which is where the 13.9% comes from that I mentioned earlier. Apologies for the earlier post, as I originally thought it meant that on average 13.9% of corners resulted in goals, when it was 13.9% of goals come from corners https://theathletic.com/4558413/202...s-are-so-important-now-in-the-premier-league/
You had Mel sterling capable of scoring a free from 30 yards in wilkos team, Ian Harte in O learns and some Lorimer lad in the Revie team wasn't too shabby. Majority of our current lot can't kick a ball 30 yards
