Straight from the kickoff IIRC. Obviously a ‘welcome to the Championship’ tackle. Never played for us again did he?
To me football is a simple game. I know I’m old school but in all my 60 years of watching football it’s been clear to me that the MAIN job of a goalkeeper is to stop the ball going in the net. A good keeper can help a team to win games if he is a good shot-stopper. IMO it’s a bonus if he is also good at distribution but not essential. The keeper passing the ball to a defender doesn’t greatly influence the chances of the team scoring at the other end of the pitch. That’s the job of the outfield players. My conclusion is that a keeper's main attribute is keeping goal well and commanding his penalty box. Ergo, pick the best shot stopper you have in the squad and you increase the chances of winning. I guess in these modern times I’m probably wrong.
you dont appreciate the modern trend to get noticed never do the obvious - it's too easy do something different. you know it wont work but you will get praise for trying to be different.
I can't believe so many want to go back to the good old days where the keeper lumped every ball upfield to bo contested in a 50:50 rather than keep possession It's better to have possession than yardage
This is your problem. Nobody is suggesting what you say. People are talking about speed in moving forward. You seem to be happy with the team waiting and passing the ball around at the back to give the opponents time to prepare to defend. The teams who do well pass the ball forward and run at speed. You dont seem to think that players can pass forward until they have first made 10 passes among the back 4 and keeper.
But that's nothing to do with the keeper. All the keeper does is offer an option to the player in possession it's not down to the keeper how fast the ball is played up the pitch
I didnt say it was. You suggested that some people are saying the keeper should kick the ball upfield resulting in a 50:50 ball Do you have any indication where that has been said? I certainly havent seen anybody suggesting that
Not said directly but implied by many If you're suggesting I've misquoted others Where have I said I'm happy with the team waiting and passing the ball round at the back to give the opponents time to prepare to defend. My opinion is very simple in football terms. If we have possession the opposition can't score.
No but if he also started one or two of the fringe players it might be seen as that. Anyway, have we another keeper we know won’t make mistakes? I don’t think so.
TigerMarv: “Not said directly but implied by many” Can you give some examples with that implication?? TigerMarv: “Where have I said I'm happy with the team waiting and passing the ball round at the back to give the opponents time to prepare to defend.” You said: “It's better to have possession than yardage”. Having possession at the back and not moving forward implies the opponents will have time to prepare to defend. TigerMarv: “My opinion is very simple in football terms. If we have possession the opposition can't score.” Most of the time when we have possession we can’t score. Having possession at the back and passing around among the goalkeeper and the back 4 makes it easier for the opposition to defend when we do decide to attack.
We don't know any player that comes in won't make mistakes, should we just never change the starting 11?
I find it very frustrating during games when we need to score yet we keep passing the ball around at the back unnecessarily. It just reduces the effective number of attempts at scoring.
This ain’t over yet. 4-0 win today and Norwich and Coventry lose or draw then the light is still firmly on at the end of the tunnel. No quarter given City. Put them to the sword Hull. We can do this. UTT.
