No match day thread....maybe I'm not the only one who had lost interest in this season, doesn't see promotion happening (thankfully) and have set my thoughts on next season?
This is no time to lose interest! With all of these volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and wars breaking out, the end of the World may be nigh. With any luck the next 8 games could result in an exciting promotion run, enjoy them while you can. Yes there is a Match thread, one of the better ones so far...
This is an interesting post St-J because after posting earlier in the season how much more enjoyable the Championship is, you've now lost interest. I don't think you are alone BTW but I feel this is what we can look forward to if we stay in this division. The alternative to being in the PL, is what we have experienced this season, more disappointment. We may well yet get promotion but to be in the Championship without success is no better than being in the PL without success IMO.
I'm not losing interest, BUT I am losing faith in my fellow Saints fans these days. Bit of a pathetic bunch to be honest; absolute entitled sulkers. As long as we are playing attractive football and there is a realistic chance of us winning every match day, then I'm into it. I don't know what more you can ask for, in reality. If you think a club the size of Southampton is going to stay in the top ten of the Premier League every season for eternity, then just wake up. In the decades to come there'll be more promotions and relegations, as we flutter between 10th and 40th places in the leagues, because that's what we are; one of the clubs in that bracket. We've been punching above our weight for a while, and now we are where we belong - in reality - and yet most of our fan base just want to pack it all in and go home. Un-f*cking-real. We are 4th in a very competitive league, have won most of the games we've played this season, and are guaranteed a play-off spot. This is after many of our so-called fans predicted us to finish mid-table or worse.
I’m fascinated by the whole psychology of not wanting to get promoted. On the one hand, those who want to stay in the Championship support the team just as much as the rest of us, cheer when we win and moan like **** when we lose. But the whole premise of not wanting to be promoted implies being happy to lose enough games to ensure failure. So which games are you happy to lose?
I am ambivalent about whether we get promoted this season. the joy of getting there would be great, but getting back in to the World of VAR and the unfairness in the different levels of the division fills me with dread! If there was a graph of my mood swings this season it would resemble the stripes on a Zebras backside. Euphoric when we get results, depressed when we don't. That is the Championship for you. Each to their own when it comes to dealing with it.
Absofuckinglutely spot on bunch of entitled hand ringers, many, as you quite rightly say, had us down for mid table mediocrity or worse.
This is pretty much how I feel. The VAR element is such a strong argument that would almost make up for failing to get promotion. Over the years I’ve supported Saints actively, which is since 1966, we have been in the First Division or the Premier League more seasons than not though, and I can’t help seeing my team as a top flight team. And the joy of getting a win at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge is every bit as euphoric as beating Plymouth or Swansea, if not more so!
Look again Jen. Thread's been up for days. I'm looking forward to some good footy with every chance of winning the playoffs. The autos appear to be out of reach but so did Leicester not so many games ago. COYR!
Don't forget as well, but historically we'd be comfortably top 2 this season. So really, it's a very good season at this level; unfortunately we've just been eclipsed by sides with quality the league has never seen before. Yes, you could argue we should be up there with those sides, but I think that's over-egging our quality tbh.
...This, we have played some ****ing fantastic football this season and scored many, many brilliant goals. After the previous 2 dire seasons I can't fathom how any Saints fan can moan too much, plus the season is not over yet! There could still be a grandstand finish.
Have generally enjoyed this season…especially our long run without losing. I accept the usual way that Saints torture us… build up hope then manage to turn a silk purse into a sows ear. I like the Championship…no VAR. A goals a goal for all that. However, I know we need promotion and quickly…there’s the bottom line to consider. Pragmatism wins in this case.
It's not so much that I don't want Southampton to storm the division and get promoted but as has been pointed out elsewhere a club of our size is going to do nothing (although Leicester have proved that is not strictly true) and we seem to do nothing better than similar sized clubs. We won the FA Cup in 1976 and it was great and I was there, but the days of a Division Two side beating a 'Division One' side in the FA Cup final seem to have gone. The Premier League is the most uncompetitive league I've ever seen, it's not fun to think if the team doesn't get relegated it is a good season. It is play-off time in UK ice hockey and my team in over twenty years (since reforming) is the only team in the division (apart from one brand-new club) that has never played in a play-off final ever, let alone win it, all the other clubs have and most have won it once at least. So perhaps this whole thing is down to me and my bad luck infecting the club?
wonderful to see that this forum is still a bunch of insulting, arrogant...well I won't use the word, lest I stoop to this person's level. My point is that this season has reached the point where it was always likely to reach...the glue that joined last year and next year. If you look at nearly every other season, the team that typically takes the third promotion spot is the team that comes into form at the end of the year, and that isn't us. Yes I have enjoyed it, but the real fun will be next year (in my opinion....my sincere apologies for having an opinion that does not coincide with yours). Nowhere have I ever said that we are a top ten premier league side. Nowhere. What I have said is that we will and should settle into being a good Championship side. I never iked the premier league. I probably never will. I am really, really sorry that makes me a pathetic and entitled sulker. I will of course cease posting anything lest my opinion differ from this individual, since they clearly run things here. And apologies for not seeing a match thread...I am clearly having a problem because I still can't see it. Everyone else, have a great summer everyone, there's no point posting here with offensive people like this around who get their sad little jollies out of insulting people whose opinion differs from theirs.
Check your Ignored Posters list, if Laces or Lemons are on there it could explain why you can’t see the match thread.
I think the ridiculous 3 week/1 month gap definitely stilted my interest a little. will be bang up for the playoffs though.
I don't think that was aimed at you, rather more those that have had every game lost before KO, predicting mid table mediocrity or worse. Enjoy the footy, ignore posts you find offensive.
Since we’ve been out of the auto race games are a little less interesting. There’s always time for a massive implosion and our last couple of games will be a chance to hold on to playoff’s.
