As reported today in The Mirror:
Tony Pulis wants to revolutionise football - by allowing managers to challenge refereeing decisions during the game .

The Stoke boss has devised a tennis-style system under which he and his counterparts can ask for a decision to be instantly reviewed by an official watching the action on a monitor in the stands.

Managers would be restricted to one challenge in each half only – even if their appeal is successful.
And Pulis' Potters saw two seemingly cast-iron penalty shouts turned down in their 3-2 defeat by QPR.

Pulis added: “This takes pressure off refs, because it gets them out of a situation when they’ve made a poor call that affects the game.”<doh>
.........................................................................................

Methinks he's never going to happy.

Then when the first call goes against Stoke it'll be "we need to get rid of this stupid rule and change it back to how it used to be."

I hate to disagree but I think this is a good idea. People agree this sort of thing is a possibility in football and this will make sure that the game flows well as each manager only gets one opportunity to challenge.

The problem comes in when you get the likes of Ferguson or Warnock demanding more and more appeals. Managers will never be happy. Ferguson and Redknapp in particular are moaning their saggy old tits off about goal line technology, but I would bet my testicles that if a few decisions go against them they'll be pining for 'the good old days' again.

I think its a good idea, cos then when Fergie challenges one and gets it wrong, he can shut his fat mouth about how referees always make the wrong decisions.

The difference with goalline technology is that it's absolutely cast-iron. Not using it in football is the rough equivalent of Formula One saying "You know what? We've got access to lasers that gives times accurate to billionths of a second, but we're going to keep using guys with stopwatches to time qualifying, because that leaves in the human element."
No-one can have any complaints, in other words.

With using cameras and a TV referee, every single decision about fouls is already very subjective - you get debates for DAYS after a game about whether X should really have been a penalty.
I like the idea of a number of fixed challenges. But if I'm honest, I'd much rather we just leave all decisions to the cameras and a group of guys in a box. Cannot possibly be that hard given how useless the officials in the PL are at the moment.
(Failing that, it should at LEAST be used for the offside rule.)

Agree with goal line technology........saw something on BBC TV, it costs like £400,000 to install. 4th official on touchline might be better. However, I like the "human" nature of refs. Mark my words, none of this would make messrs Ferguson, Warnock or Pulis ANY happier. They're just whingers.

This. Plus I'm stood in the 'it's all part of the beautiful game' corner. And that decisions generally do balance out over a season or there abouts. Debating a decision for days IS part of football! When we lose I like to have something to moan about! Plus when Saylor gets away with hand balling it in the area due to his sterling acting potential, it's a good thing ;)

Good idea if im honest. Never a fan of goal line technology. A tennis style challenge system would be much better.

Goal line disputes are a very rare controversy. Offside goals, penalty decisions, red cards are much more common and the challenge system would allow this to be addressed

Ridiculous idea. You'd get managers using it tactically, such as when they're caught on the break after a corner they'd say there was a push in the box. Even if the ref waited until after the counter attack was completed, you'd have the stupid scenario of a goal being scored, then the ref going back to something that happened over a minute earlier, and maybe disallowing a goal to award a penalty and nullifying a whole passage of play. It's ridiculous and unworkable. Pulis should concentrate on sorting his own ****ty team out rather than devising harebrained schemes and pathetic excuses as to why his team are in a relegation battle.

Also, like others have said, sometimes you get people debating for days whether something should or shouldn't have been given, and even then they don't agree. Football isn't black or white, there are plenty of grey areas. It's not like tennis where a ball is either in or out, it's very subjective.

Goal line technology I have no problem with if it's done right. If the refs are having to go over to a monitor to watch a replay from a goal line camera it's ridiculous. If it's a case of perhaps sensors detect the ball crossing the line and buzzing in the lineman's ear who then raises his flag, it's a good idea.

It's not a bad idea. However it wouldn't stop managers moaning... You could challenge a decision successfully, then the ref could miss an absolute stone-wall penalty for your team right after...

We have to except that dubious decisions are just part of football now- however, goal line technology will clear them up in one department at least!

Why don't they just have a guy watching a monitor anyway? Somebody who can advise the ref via headset of his opinion on an incident, then the ref can give it or take it like he would with a linesman.

Kind of like a fourth official that actually does something?

I agree with this <ok>

I'd also add that the tactical use of the appeal would follow the lines of the appeal system in cricket, whereby if you have an appeal left and you conceed a late goal a manager appeals anyway even if he has no reason to suspect that it shouldn't been given, just on the off chance that the fourth official spots something on the replay.

Just goal line technology for me.
