It’s just a circle, there’ll be 3 more teams with parachute payments +1 that maybe doesn’t go up. I’m not sure by oranges thinking when “yet” actually turns into “now”
McKenna has had 11 months longer in role... But started a league below. Ipswich have since stepped up to this level and then some. Rosenior's tenure with us - he started at this level, plugged up a sinking ship really effectively and as of right now has marginally improved us. Obviously we'll have to see where we are at the end of the season to get a better idea on how far we've come in a year and a half. There are potentially mitigating factors which help explain the recent downturn in form which has effected our league position, but I truly believe the biggest reason for everything and the reason which overarches all others is the style of play, the flaws with it, and our unwillingness to make alterations to it. It's great at nullifying the opposition a lot of the time, purely because it boils every game down to very fine margins, with usually very few major chances going either way. Our scorelines even when we win are rarely convincing, and as we've seen too often goals can come out of nowhere and sucker punch you - we've dropped a lot of points this season from trying to control games that we should have been trying harder to get ahead in, or killing off when we'd taken the lead. From what I've seen over the past 15 months the system we insist on sticking to is limited. Persisting with it doesn't to me suggest we'll get our just rewards, it suggests we'll remain at that level and not ascend to the next one. There's time to change this by tweaking the way we play, but the willingness, common sense and desire to change it has to be there - and the thing that scares/baffles me is that I don't think that's going to happen due to what seems to be a misplaced ideal that what we're seeing right now is the most effective way to play football... It's either I'm correct about the above or instead the finger should get pointed at the players for just not doing as they're asked. After so long though, I can't imagine the latter can be true. The biggest three reasons Rosenior should be reassessing this style of play right now... Mounting pressure We don't create many chances - this isn't a recent thing, though it has gotten worse over the past month or so We haven't won since Southampton away - probably our best performance of the season. That was 20th February.
Given that it didn't for the first 104 years of our history it didn't. So there are clearly no guarantees. But with time, and incremental upward pressure by developing, selling, reinvesting (or a change in owner financing structure) there's always that hope. But the PL is going to become an absolute cartel if the game keeps the current direction of travel. Bit as always, it's the hope in football that kills you, more often than not.
It's a cogent argument, but clubs are successful in this broad style, at our level or lower and with not the largest relative budgets and with time, and successive recruitments it will inevitably evolve, but any other manager will be recruited to play broadly the same way, as that's the owners model, so to speak.
But agin this is why it’s a wasted opportunity, we aren’t closer the playoffs because of budgets. We aren’t closer the playoffs because of the way Rosie insists we play. In 2 games we’ve created 2 shots on target, The great escape team of Jon Whitney, Gary Brabin etc a team of grafters and kickers put together on a small budget was more exciting. Honestly orange I can live with not making promotion as long as I can take comfort in knowing we are playing exciting football
We aren't closer to the playoffs, because the recruitment in January hasn't lived up to expectation. Liam rightly will be scrutinised, but the style or tactics haven't changed from before, yet we've gone backwards. The ones in charge of strategy, and the players themselves all have questions to answer in that respect also.
I see a constant in that argument with most of Liam's detractors, and it always comes back to style. I find it easy on the eye most of the time just feel the tempo needs to change all to often. But if you're fundamentally opposed to the style then you're never going to warm to the man implementing it, I suppose
If we’ve gone backwards then what hasn’t he changed/tweaked his tactics to change or improve things. We lost delap and I ageee it’s a big loss but he wasn’t prolific. I know you’ll hit me with we lost more than goals when we lost him. Also if we can’t expect them to finish 6th how can you say they haven’t lived upto expectation …which is it?
That may not be what you said after the transfer windows and we had just signed or loaned the next Messi, Ronaldo, future Premier league stars, the best kids from Liverpool and man city, and other such over the top ravings.
I’m not against it, I just don’t think it works. We are too slow in transition l, we are too slow breaking and we create nothing. I’ve said before the risks have to be out weighed by the rewards but they aren’t. He tries to hoodwink us into believing his theory rather than what we see on the pitch
Expectation was 10th hat the start of the season. Acun states 8th would be seen as progress and that if we missed out on playoffs " it's OK, just means we're not ready yet " in a post jan tigers+ interview, but quite obviously if you're in and around 6th going into Jan and then supposedly strengthen, it's going to be seen as unsuccessful of you don't at least hold position, whether in a general sense you were overachieving to get to that point in the first place. As are moth things in life, it's a multifaceted scenario.
Why? I was as hopeful and excited as everyone else, but always mindful we had some better established, better resourced sides to overcome to achieve playoffs. Really my argument is there's a difference between aspiration and expectation. The former is more reasonable than the latter
Fair enough. I'd say that he's 90% of the way there and we're just lacking that bit of attacking confidence, an aggressive ****er in the Delap role and there's no reason we wont click over time.
The style LR chooses to play isn't bad or boring. But the way he has us playing it is terrible and makes it look boring
